Fix this textST. MICHAEL'S, PARISH CHURCH
Fix this textOF MELBOURNE, ENGLAND
Fix this textr T'HE English Melbourne is the “kitchen
Fix this text■*- garden” of Derbyshire, for it is situated in
Fix this textpleasant rolling country, eight miles from
Fix this textDerby and is the centre of a market-gardening
Fix this textcommunity (population 4200). Its chief feature
Fix this textof interest is Melbourne Hall, the birthplace
Fix this textof Viscount Melbourne, after whom the capital
Fix this textof Victoria was named.
Fix this textThe town itself has a long and notable
Fix this texthistory, and it is recorded in the Domesday
Fix this textBook- (1085) as a royal manor. A castle was
Fix this textestablished there in the 14th century, and it
Fix this textwas there that John Duke of Bourbon, the
Fix this textmost important prisoner taken at the Battle of
Fix this textAgincourt (1415), was held a prisoner for
Fix this textnineteen years. His captivity, however, was not
Fix this textapparently too unpleasant for he was allowed
Fix this textto incur debts totalling £2OOO. By the 17th
Fix this textcentury the fortress was completely in ruins
Fix this textand only the scantiest remains exist today.
Fix this textAs befits a town possessing such an ancient
Fix this textpast, Melbourne has a splendid parish church.
Fix this textWhen it was built it was the largest and most
Fix this textimportant church in south Derbyshire. Its
Fix this textname is St. Michael’s Church, and it is shown
Fix this textin the accompanying illustration. It was built in
Fix this textthe early years of the 12th century, and is one
Fix this textof the finest examples of Norman architecture
Fix this textin Britain. A feature of the interior is the
Fix this textgreat horseshoe arches of the nave, which are
Fix this textsupported by pillars as round and as massive
Fix this textas stately oak-trees.
Fix this textThe church has in addition to its square,
Fix this textembattled main tower two pointed towers at
Fix this textits western end, which have the appearance of
Fix this textKentish oast-houses.
Fix this textNear by is the beautiful Queen Anne
Fix this textmansion—Melbourne Hall—which was built
Fix this textduring the 16th century but considerably
Fix this textaltered and enlarged by Thomas Coke in 1721.
Fix this textSome of the stones used in the building were
Fix this texttaken from the castle, mentioned above, by
Fix this textSir John Coke, who was Secretary-of-State to
Fix this textCharles I (1625-49). By the marriage of his
Fix this textdaughter to Sir Matthew Lamb, the Melbourne
Fix this textproperty changed hands. The second Viscount
Fix this textMelbourne, Queen Victoria’s first Prime Minis-
Fix this textter, was the most notable member of the
Fix this textLamb family. His father had taken the title
Fix this textfrom the name of the township, and it is after
Fix this textthe second Viscount that the capital of
Fix this textVictoria was named. A silver trowel displayed
Fix this textin the Library is the one used by Lord Palmer-
Fix this textston in 1853 to lay the foundation-stone of the
Fix this textMelbourne Athenaeum.
Fix this textA humble cottage on the estate was the birth-
Fix this textplace in 1808 of Thomas Cook, founder of the
Fix this textworld-wide travel-agency, and benefactor to
Fix this texthis native place.
