Fix this textBANGOR CATHEDRAL CLEARLY SHOWS IT'S ANCIENT ORIGINS.
Fix this textTHE historic Cathedral City and market-town of Bangor lies beside the
Fix this textMenai Straits in North Wales, and for fourteen hundred years it has
Fix this textbeen a centre of religion and learning. Like Llandaff and St. Asaph, it had
Fix this textits early beginnings as a small community which grew up around a monastic
Fix this textestablishment, which, at Bangor, was founded early in the sixth century by
Fix this textSt. Deiniol. In later years it grew in wealth and influence and became the
Fix this textcentre of a large diocese in North Wales.
Fix this textIn 1071 the church that had succeeded St. Deiniol’s original building was
Fix this textdestroyed by the Normans who, later, replaced it by a church in which
Fix this textArchbishop Baldwin, of Canterbury, preached the Crusade on his tour through
Fix this textWales in 1188. A hundred years later this building was in turn ruined
Fix this textduring the wars of Edward I. Rebuilt, burnt down and rebuilt again time
Fix this textafter time, the cathedral has had a chequered history. King John destroyed
Fix this textit in 1210, but later repented and helped towards its restoration. After its
Fix this textfurther destruction by the followers of Owen Glendower in 1404, the struc-
Fix this textture lay in ruins for almost a century. It was rebuilt during the period
Fix this text1496-1532, and in 1866-70 it was thoroughly restored by Sir George Gilbert
Fix this textScott when £30,000 was spent on the restoration.
Fix this textSeveral details of the Norman church are still visible on the external
Fix this textface of the south side of the chancel. Among the many monuments withm
Fix this textthe Cathedral is one commemorating Owain Gwynedd, King of Gwynedd,
Fix this textwho died in 1169. A curious relic of earlier days is a pair of tongs which
Fix this textwere used for removing stray dogs from church, and which are now kept at
Fix this textthe west end of the north aisle.
Fix this textAnother prominent feature of Bangor, and shown in the background of
Fix this textthis illustration, is the fine modern block of buildings which houses the Arts
Fix this textDepartments, the Administrative offices, the Library and Common Rooms of
Fix this textthe University College of North Wales, one of the four constituent colleges
Fix this textforming the University of Wales. At Bangor can also be seen the Museum
Fix this textof Welsh Antiquities, which contains exhibits designed to illustrate the life
Fix this textand culture of Wales from prehistoric times to the present day.
