Fix this textSALTWOOD CASTLE, WHERE THE DEATH OF A TURBULENT PRIEST WAS PLANNED
Fix this textON the high uplands a mile north-west of the Kentish seaside resort of
Fix this textHythe is Saltwood Castle, the ancient fortress where the conspirators
Fix this textagainst the life of Archbishop Thomas Becket met immediately before leaving
Fix this textto carry out the assassination in Canterbury Cathedral. This grim tragedy
Fix this textwas schemed in the greatest secrecy within the walls of the original castle
Fix this textof Saltwood on the night of December 28, 1170, by the four knights—
Fix this textFitzurse, de Tracy, de Morville and le Breton, together with Randolph de
Fix this textBroc, who, at that time, was holding the castle under grant from Henry 11.
Fix this textDe Broc had a bitter personal feud against the Archbishop, by whom he
Fix this texthad been excommunicated. The others considered no doubt that they were
Fix this textbut carrying out the implied behest of their Royal master, Henry 11, who, on
Fix this texthearing of some new action on the part of the Archbishop in opposition to
Fix this texthis policy towards the church, exclaimed in exasperation “Is there not one
Fix this textof the crew of lazy, cowardly knights whom I maintain, that will rid me of
Fix this textthis turbulent priest.” The four knights responded to their sovereign’s
Fix this textchallenge, from whom, after the deed was done, they received nothing but
Fix this textcondemnation and disavowal. Nevertheless, they were never convicted and
Fix this textpunished for their crime.
Fix this textAs far back as Roman days a fort of some kind existed on or near the
Fix this textsite of the present castle, which incorporates some of the early masonry.
Fix this textFrom early Christian times it was held under grant by Archbishops of
Fix this textCanterbury, and it was the seizure of this castle by the Crown, and the
Fix this textgranting of it to de Broc by Henry 11, that was one of Becket’s bitterest
Fix this textgrievances against the King.
Fix this textIn the 13th century, during the reign of King John, the castle was
Fix this textrestored to the Church and in 1381 Archbishop Courtney. reconstructed the
Fix this textcastle. The gatehouse in its present majestic proportions was built at that
Fix this texttime, and an Audience Hall and Chapel were added to the buildings in the
Fix this textInner Court. A moat, now dry, still surrounds the whole of the inner ward,
Fix this textand the deep grooves of the portcullis are still in good repair. Much damage
Fix this textwas done to the castle by an earthquake in. 1580, but it was repaired in 1882
Fix this textand the great Gatehouse was converted into a habitable dwelling. From its
Fix this textsummit on a clear day the white cliffs near Boulogne across the Channel can
Fix this textbe seen.
