Fix this textHeriot’s Hospital, now a boys’ secondary school, stands in Lauriston

Fix this textThe buildings of the school are formed around a central quadrangle and
Fix this textare elaborately turreted and decorated, particularly above the windows. They
Fix this textwere begun m 1628 to the designs of William Wallace, the King’s master
Fix this textmason. The whole edifice is a splendid example of the Renaissance
Fix this textarchitecture of that period. It incorporates the Tudor castellated baronial
Fix this textstyle with Gothic details; at each angle are square towers surmounted by
Fix this textturrets.
Fix this textThe edifice was requisitioned b‘y Cromwell as a military Hospital and was
Fix this textnot used for its intended purpose until 1659 when General Monk removed the
Fix this textpatients. The western wall of the building adjoins a portion of the old City
Fix this textWall which was built after the Battle of Flodden in 1513.
