Fix this textIN ST. DAVID'S CATHEDRAL,
Fix this textPEMBROKESHIRE
Fix this textNEAR the .bold promontory of St. David’s Head,
Fix this textin Pembrokeshire, the most westerly point
Fix this textin Wales, stands St. Davids Cathedral —the cradle
Fix this textof Welsh Christianity. The location of the
Fix this textcathedral and the nearby village on (be plateau
Fix this textabove St. Bride’s Bay are worthy of their proud
Fix this textplace in the annals of Wales.
Fix this textThe cathedral is a comparatively small building,
Fix this textbeing 21)0 feet in length, and was built in the
Fix this textTransitional-Norman style of the 12th and 14th
Fix this textcenturies. Restoration has given the outside of
Fix this textthe cathedral a somewhat severe and plain appear-
Fix this textance which is in striking contrast to the richly-
Fix this textdecorated interior.
Fix this textAn attractive feature of the cathedral is the
Fix this textelaborately carved and painted ceiling, and one of
Fix this textthe most perfect examples of . medieval carving
Fix this textcan be seen in the choir screen which is renowned
Fix this textfor its beauty. It was built in the 14th century
Fix this textby Bishop Cower, whose tomb and recumbent
Fix this textelfigy stand nearby. One of the richly-carved stalls
Fix this textis reserved for the reigning sovereign, and was
Fix this textoccupied recently by Queen Elizabeth II on a
Fix this textvisit to St. David’s.
Fix this textHere, too, can be seen the Bishop’s Throne,
Fix this textwhich is nearly thirty feet high and’ is one of
Fix this textfew remaining medieval examples in Britain. On
Fix this textthe north side of the Presbytery is the late 13th-
Fix this textcentury Shrine of St. David, founder of the
Fix this textcathedral about the year 550. Since then there
Fix this texthave been a hundred and twenty-one bishops of
Fix this textSt. David’s, and there are fifty-three churches in
Fix this textWales dedicated to his memory.
Fix this textSt. David was born the north shore of St.
Fix this textBride's Bay, and the chapel dedicated to his
Fix this textmother is reputed to mark the actual place of his
Fix this textbirth; it is the oldest ecclesiastical building still
Fix this textstanding in Wa'les,
Fix this textNo. 353: the Homeland Series by the House of Seppelt.
