Engage the broader

community

Widening support for the Putting Students First campaign is

important.

Henry Rajendra

Acting Assistant General

Secretary (Schools)

Federation Salaries, Staffing and

Security campaign committees

across NSW public schools have

begun the important work of fur-

ther engaging parents and commu-

nities in the Putting Students First

campaign.

The outstanding success of the

June 27 strike and rallies has pro-

vided strong platform for mem-

bers to seek wider support for the

Putting Students First Charter.

Broadening the campaign to in-

clude parents is an important step

in building an alliance that is pre-

pared to defend the learning condi-

tions of students and demand pos-

itive outlook for all public schools.

Assisted by Federation Organis-

ers, Associations and school cam-

paign committees have begun at-

tending P&C meetings and holding

forums where parents, teachers

and other community members

are able to consider the ramifica-

tions of Local Schools, Local Deci-

sions; Every Student, Every School;

staff cuts to state office and emerg-

ing threats to various programs

and support structures for schools,

including the imminent disman-

tling of the Equity Directorate. (See

story about RAM on page and

other stories pages -9.)

Community forums and meet-

ings have been well attended and

parents and teachers have engaged

the issues through compelling local

stories of the negative impacts of

the O'Farrell Government's attacks

on public school communities.

Parents and teachers have asked

tough questions of attending De-

partment of Education and Com-

munities bureaucrats, Coalition

MPs and the Minister, and remain

bewildered by the failure of the

Minister and Premier to sign the

Putting Students First Charter.

To further support campaign

committees in the task of engaging

the wider community, Federation

has developed Putting Students

First Power Point presentation and

speaker notes. Members are en-

couraged to use these resources to

help explain the campaign issues to

meetings of parents and frame dis-

cussions about the experiences and

perspective of their school. This

and other material to assist your

preparation for parent meetings is

available Federation’s website.

As spring arrives, association

and school campaign commit-

tees are being encouraged to book

spaces at local markets and fairs.

similar strategy was used to great

effect during the Gonski review.

Federation has range of material

available that will ensure associa-

tions and schools are well equipped

for such activities, including cam-

paign badged tablecloths, commu-

nity leaflets, temporary tattoos,

stickers and balloons. Committees

are urged to contact their Organis-

er to make their order and arrange

delivery.

new series of television and

radio advertisements is being de-

veloped. This media backdrop will

continue to support the work of as-

sociations and schools in engaging

the wider public.

With so much happening in our

schools, new Putting Students First

e-Bulletin has been developed to

support and coordinate the work of

SSS campaign committees. The e-

bulletin will be emailed to commit-

tees every fortnight. If your school

has yet to register its SSS campaign

committee, you can do so via the

Campaigns section of the Federa-

tion’s website or by emailing the

name of your school and commit-

tee members to mail@nswtf.org.au.

Members are to be congratu-

lated for the ongoing and growing

support for the campaign to put

students first. It is vital that every

public school across NSW contin-

ues to engage their communities

and put pressure on their local MP

to support the Charter.

MP asked to reconsider

LSLD and ESES

Local MP didn't sign charter but will take delegation's concerns

to Minister.

Phil von Schoenberg

and Mark Thurston

Port Macquarie Teachers Associ-

ation delegation met with local MP

Leslie Williams on August to dis-

cuss Every Student, Every School

and Local Schools, Local Decisions.

At previous meeting in June

the Association agreed to provide

Mrs Williams with information

on the effects the Every Student,

Every School initiative would have

on local students, families and

public schools in Port Macquarie.

6,700 Gonski hands, with the

names of almost every public

school in the nation, were planted

in the lawn of Parliament House on

August 20.

August 20 marked six months

since the release of the final report

of the Gonski review.

Principals, parents and union

representatives personally signed

the hands to make up the powerful

visual display.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and

Federal Education Minister Peter

Garrett came out to view the hands.

Ms Gillard was presented with the

Gonski hand from the public high

school that she attended, Unley

High in South Australia, by the

current principal, parent repre-

sentative and an ex-student who

is currently studying medicine at

Australian National University.

Many other MPs and Senators,

including Greens, Labor back-

benchers such as Sharon Bird

and Stephen Jones, and independ-

ents, came out to view the display

and to again pledge their support

for the review and to call for im-

mediate action. Independent MP

Tony Windsor was the first MP to

publicly support the review rec-

ommendations and he did so again

when he viewed the display of

Gonski hands.

Federation was represented

in Canberra by President Maurie

Mulheron, Executive member

and Villawood East Public school

principal Kathy Deacon, and Fed-

eration member and NSW Second-

ary Principals’ Council President

Lila Mularczyk.

It is critical that members con-

tinue to pressure their federal MP

to act on the review and to encour-

age parents and the wider commu-

nity to support the campaign.
