EDUCATION

JOURNAL OF THE NEW SOUTH WALES TEACHERS FEDERATION

Agreement No. PP255003 00104

Vol. 80 No*3 iVSarch X>

Forum to put politicians

on the spot

by Kerri Carr

The three Federations will put politicians

on the spot at public education forum.

@BODYTEXT:NSW Teachers

Federation, NSW Federation of School

Community Organisations (FOSCO) and

Federation of Parents and Citizens of NSW

will convene the forum to be held in the

theatrette at Parliament House, Macquarie

Street on Thursday March 11.

Leaders of the four major political par-

ties in the State election have been invited

to speak for 10 minutes on their education

policies.

These are ALP leader Bob Carr,

Coalition leader Kerry Chikarovski,

Democrats leader Dr Arthur-Chesterfield

Evans and Greens leader lan Cohen.

Should the leaders of the parties be

unable to attend, they have been asked to

nominate representative to speak on their

behalf.

This will be followed by question and

answer session

Journalist Quentin Dempster will be

moderator for the forum.

NSW Teachers Federation President Sue

Simpson said: “As the campaign proceeds

the ALP remains silent on its plans for the

future whereas the Coalition has made

number of commitments and statements

that require further examination and clarifi-

cation.

“At this stage there appears to be num-

ber of issues that needs clarification such as

staffing of schools, the future of the state-

wide transfer system and local selection.

“There are major issues affecting teach-

ers in the classroom, such as the needs of

kids with disabilities, whether they be in

regular or special schools, that must be

addressed and the forum will give this

opportunity to parents and members of the

community to express their views,” she

said.

Ms'Simpson also said: “Our experience

with the Coalition’s industrial relations pol-

icy shows that debate and scrutiny is essen-

tial.

“Opposition industrial relations

spokesman Chris Hartcher sought to allay

concerns of the union movement through

letter.

“Our degree of scepticism was vindi-

cated when George Souris, the deputy

leader of the Coalition, indicated that

employers needed more power in industrial

relations and more control over unions’

activities and entitlements.

“It is this experience that shows us that

voters in NSW do need and deserve the

opportunity to debate and scrutinise poli-

cies,” Ms Simpson said.

Seating at the forum will be limited to

175. Ticket allocation will be through the

three Federations.

Evans, lan Cohen.

ALP CHARBAUX

ALP quizzed on

education policy plans

by Sue Simpson

Federation still seeks more detailed plans of the ALP’s policies for public education.

Federation General Secretary John Hennessy has written to Education Minister John Aquilina with

some specific questions based on public statements made by him or the Premier on crucial issues or which

offer him the opportunity to respond to comments made by the Shadow minister Stephen O'Doherty.

Mr Hennessy recently wrote to Shadow education minister Stephen O’Doherty in similar form. Those

questions were reproduced in the last edition of Education.
