EDUCATION

JOURNAL OF THE NEW SOUTH VALES TEACHERS FEDERATION.

Agreement No. PP255003 00104

lkj

Minister fails to respond to proposal

by Sue Simpson

Negotiations have still not com-

menced on teacher salaries.

During Education Week,

Federation sent proposal to the

Minister for an agreement on new

teacher efficiency procedures;

procedures for school reviews; as

well as memorandum of under-

standing on pay equity for casual

teachers; and an extension of the

school staffing agreement until

April 30, 2001. This was reiter-

ated at meeting with Director-

General, Dr Ken Boston, on

October 18.

Federation indicated quite

clearly it was prepared to finalise

the two matters the Government

sees as pre-condition for the

commencement of negotiations:

new teacher efficiency procedures

and school reviews.

The Government and

Federation know there is no legal

requirement for the Federation to

finalise these two matters.

Nevertheless, Federation provided

the Government with an opportu-

nity during Education Week to

distance itself from the abusive

and misleading advertisements the

Department placed in newspapers

the week before.

Where’s Johnny? Federation members in western Sydney con-

verged on Education Minister John Aquilina’s electorate office at

Marayong on October 19 as they participated in the first day of

two-hour rolling stoppages across the state during the week. But

there was sign on the door indicating there was nobody at the

The Minister has still not cho-

sen to respond to this letter in any

form.

The Minister was absent from

the ALP State Conference on

study tour of schools in Greece

with some school principals. The

Minister’s office was not even

prepared to tell us when the

Minister would be returning to

duty in NSW.

Federation’s letter to the

Minister objected strongly to the

Government’s attacks on teachers

Bans continue Full list page

through the newspaper advertise-

ments and Dr Boston’s letter to

parents. The Department is simply

the agent of the Minister. The

Minister is now only the Minister

for Good News Announcements.

On the difficult, controversial

issues Dr Boston or Assistant

Director-General Steve Buckley

promote the Government’s nasty

attacks. The senior bureaucracy

has lost its independence and is

well and truly politicised. Public

continued page

office that day. Not deterred, teachers chanted “2-4-6-8 we are here to negotiate” and

sang “We’ve got the worst Minister in the world” to the tune of He's got the whole

world in his hands. The crowd heard from President Sue Simpson and Organiser

Angelo Gavrielatos about the Government’s failure to negotiate on salaries.

Aquilina’s hearts and minds splurge

Strong support for campaign against TAFE cuts

by Phil Bradley

Thousands of TAFE members,

supporters from other TAFE

unions and students rallied in front

of NSW Parliament House in

opposition to budget and job cuts

on Wednesday September 22.

The rally formed part of 24-

hour strike action by TAFE mem-

bers throughout NSW.

The protest was so loud it inter-

rupted speakers in the House.

Rally speakers, who strongly

criticised the Federal and NSW

governments’ cuts, included

Federation President Sue

Simpson, TAFE TA Secretary

Linda Simon, TAFE TA President

Geoff Turnbull, NSW Labor

Council Assistant Secretary John

Robertson, Public Service

Association Vice President Sue

Walsh and Australian Workers’

Union NSW branch Assistant

Secretary Col Bosworth.

The proposed closure of

Seaforth TAFE College provoked

particularly strong criticism, with

the Manly MP David Barr sup-

porting the TAFE members’ cause

both outside and inside the

Parliament. The crowd was also

treated to stirring speech from

Seaforth TAFE’s Jim Bannister.

Due to the support and lobbying

of members, TAFE members con-

tinue to receive sympathetic

media coverage in the country and

city centres alike, including on

Sydney television channels.

Federation congratulates its

TAFE and other members who

supported the strike action.

Other action

public sector unions’ job

cuts/privatisation meeting con-

vened by the NSW Labor Council

in September gave strong support

for joint public sector union

meeting before the ALP State

Conference, appropriately

scathing motions at the

Conference and joint

strike/rally.

Unions represented at the meet-

ing, in addition to Federation,

were the Public Service

Association; Rail, Tram and Bus

Union; Australian Services

Union; Liquor, Hospitality and

Miscellaneous Workers Union;

Australian Workers Union;

Construction, Forestry, Mining

and Energy Union; and Health and

Research Employees Association.

Other unions also displayed

anger about their treatment at the

hands of the Carr Government.

There was also well sup-

ported teacher reception outside

the Sydney Town Hall for the

Annual State Conference of the

Australian Labor Party on October

2, with hundreds of delegates

receiving information leaflets

about the TAFE cuts and Seaforth

College closure. Again, there was

television coverage of the protests

both outside and inside the Town

continued page

rally outside NSW Parliament House on September 22 opposed budget and job cuts to TAFE.
