EDUCATION

JOURNAL OF THE NWE SOUTH WALES TEACHERS FEDERATION

Agreement No. PP255003 00104

Strike wave hits public education

by Dennis Long

Members attending Sky Channel

meetings during three-hour stop-

work on November 12 voted over-

whelmingly to endorse an extensive

program of industrial action, includ-

ing 24-hour strike on November

18 and five two-hour strikes.

More than 22,000 members sup-

ported the recommendation, which

rejected the award application

lodged in the Industrial Relations

Commission by the Department of

Education and Training (DET) as

“the greatest attack ever on the pro-

fessionalism and status of the pro-

fession” and “deliberate insult to

the teaching profession”.

Members demanded the with-

drawal of the award application,

genuine negotiations and an interim

payment “as sign of good faith”.

Meetings were spirited and

extremely well-attended in the wake

of the fury in the teaching profes-

sion provoked by the so-called

“website offer” posted on

November 1. Federation’s member-

ship section reported surge of

applications from non-members.

rally was planned outside

Parliament House in Sydney during

the 24-hour strike with rallies to be

held at the electoral offices of coun-

try MPs.

Members noted the struggle that

TAFE teachers are engaged in to

prevent job cuts. DET’s award

application was seen as continuing

“the Carr Government’s attacks on

TAFE”.

It was also seen as “disgrace

that Labor government should

emulate the industrial relations prac-

tices” of federal Minister Peter

Reith and former Victorian Premier

Jeff Kennett.

Federation’s salaries and status

claim was first presented to the

Minister more than 15 months ago.

There has been no attempt by the

Government or DET to secure

negotiated agreement.

Further Sky Channel meetings

are planned for the fifth of the two

hour stoppages on December to

allow members to vote upon “fur-

ther industrial action during 1999

and/or action at the commencement

of the new school year in 2000”.
