August 25, 2014 Vol 95 No

Public meetings to voice

education cuts concerns

NSW event on September 16 at Penrith RSL Club.

Maurie Mulheron

President

Tire Federal Budget brought down

in May has heralded an across-the-

board attack on education that in-

cludes the loss of more than 70 per

cent of scheduled Gonski funding.

But many teachers will also be

deeply worried about the cuts to

other sectors including the loss of

the Child Care Benefit and cuts

to the guaranteed provision of 15

hours of quality pre-school.

As has been reported on

number of occasions, the NSW

TAFE system is under direct threat

by the NSW Government under

scheme called Smart and Skilled.

But this will be exacerbated by fed-

eral cuts to range of skills-based

programs. Fees will increase sub-

stantially resulting in young people

being forced into cycle of debt

even before they gain employment.

The university sector, already

under enormous cost pressures,

will see dramatic and unparalleled

cuts. It has been estimated that as

result of the May Budget some-

where between 35 to 40 per cent

of university places will have their

funding cut. To make up for the

loss of government funding, uni-

versities will be allowed to com-

pletely deregulate their fee struc-

tures which will result in huge

hikes in student fees. But not only

will there be massive increase in

fees, compounding interest rate

of up to per cent on HECS-HELP

will be imposed on existing as well

as future students.

In short, from the cradle to

career, an entire generation of will

see education costs soar. As nation

we will see social and economic in-

equality further entrenched.

Federation, in close collabora-

tion with our national union, the

Australian Education Union, the

union that covers child-care work-

ers, United Voice, and the National

Tertiary Education Union, has or-

ganised series of public meetings

in the eastern sea-board states to

publicise our concerns.

The NSW event will take place

on September 16 at Penrith RSL

Club at 6pm. There will he

number of speakers from the dif-

ferent sectors: pre-school, school,

TAFE and higher education. The

purpose of the event is to make the

community aware of the serious

impact of the education cuts.

It is envisaged that this will be

the first of many public meetings

and forums that the education

sector unions will host across the

nation as opposition to the funding

cuts grow.

Teachers won't be ambushed

Embracing Local Schools,

Local Decisions would lay the

groundwork for commercial

privatisation of the NSW public

education system, Federation

President Maurie Mulheron said.

Mr Mulheron said that for the

past three decades conserva-

tives have stalked public edu-

cation with waves of change to

bring about weakened universal

provision.

Gonski benefits

Ann Sudmalis MP (second from right) heard from teacher Holly Pastor, Federation

Representative Bill Bruffey, assistant principal Foti Loupo and P&C representative

Peter Dooley about the importance of the need for Gonski funding to be guaran-

teed into the fifth and six years.

Dennis Long

Editor

Federal MP for Gilmore Ann Sud-

malis was presented with the

benefits of increased funding for

schools under the Gonski model

during visit to Vincentia High

School on July 29.

According to the school's news-

letter, Ms Sudmalis was invited

to “allow staff and parents the

chance to show her some of the

great things happening at the

school as result of the Gonski

Funding model”.

Ms Sudmalis was invited by

Federation Representative Bill

Bruffey.

The newsletter advised that

teachers and parents met with Ms

Sudmalis and "took her on tour

of the school, outlining the many

programs that have been devel-

oped through the additional fund-

ing. These programs include the

Homework Centre, Senior HSC

tutoring, Year into transition,

Community Partnerships, Break-

fast Club, the Flexible Learning

Centre and many others."

The tour ended at the Bush-

scape Cafe.

"The cafe setting allowed

for teachers and parents to dis-

cuss with Ms Sudmalis the im-

portance of the Gonski funding

model, which the current govern-

ment has agreed to fund for four

years. The group stressed the im-

portance of the need for the fund-

ing to be guaranteed into the fifth

and six years, where the lion’s

share of the funding is placed.

"Ms Sudmalis was impressed

by the fantastic programs being

run at the school, but would not

commit the government to fund

Gonski beyond the fourth year.”

The Liberal Party suffered

swing of 2.67 per cent in Gilmore

at the federal election last year

following campaigning by Shoal-

haven and South Illawarra teach-

ers associations.

Ms Sudmalis would lose the

seat with further swing of 2.65

per cent.

From cradle to career,

education cuts hurt
