Fix this textThis is an almost unprecedented President Writes”—which stems
Fix this textfrom almost unprecedented action within Australia.
Fix this textRecently we have seen the flouting of
Fix this textconvention after convention, conventions that are absolutely essential for
Fix this textthe survival of our system of parliamentary democracy.
Fix this textIn the last “President Writes” I expressed the belief the
Fix this textone basic convention that would not be flouted was the one
Fix this textthat the Governor General would accept the advice of the
Fix this textPrime Minister who commanded a majority in the people's house
Fix this textthe House of Representatives. I was wrong.
Fix this textI believe that no other construction can be placed on this action
Fix this textother than that the Governor General, the Queen’s representative,
Fix this texthas failed to keep himself absolutely above party political
Fix this textconsiderations and, instead, has entered the party political arena.
Fix this textIt saddens me tremendously to see that the people who, more
Fix this textthan others, should be the guardians of law and order, the
Fix this textpreservers of fundamental conventions, have been violators of
Fix this textthat law and order, and those conventions. It is more than
Fix this textever necessary that the people of Australia
Fix this textshould now demonstrate their ability to maintain basic conventions
Fix this textwithout which our parliamentary democracy becomes unworkable.
Fix this textThe forthcoming election can in no way be viewed as a party-
Fix this textpolitical election. It is an election that should transcend
Fix this textparty politics an election that should clearly demonstrate
Fix this textthe attachment of the people of A ustralia to our system of
Fix this textparliamentary democracy; and to the preservation of all customs
Fix this textand conventions fundamental to the successful operation of that system.
Fix this textThis attachment can only be shown in this unprecedented election
Fix this textby the return of the elected Whitlam Government.
Fix this textBecause of my sincere and fundamental belief in the necessity
Fix this textto preserve our democratic system, I urge all federation
Fix this textmembers to do everything within their power as individual
Fix this textcitizens to secure the return of the Whitlam Government. I
Fix this textalso request all members to let us know that they desire
Fix this textfederation as the official organ representing N.S. W.
Fix this textteachers to do everything it can possibly do to secure the
Fix this textpreservation of proper democratic government within Australia.
