Education

JOURNAL OF THE NEW SOUTH WALES TEACHERS’ FEDERATION

Vol. 56, No. 20.

NOVEMBER 19, 1975

Price: 30 cents

Registered at the G.P.0., Sydney, for trans-

mission by post as newspaper—Category B.

This is an almost unprecedented President Writes”—which stems

from almost unprecedented action within Australia.

Recently we have seen the flouting of

convention after convention, conventions that are absolutely essential for

the survival of our system of parliamentary democracy.

In the last “President Writes” expressed the belief the

one basic convention that would not be flouted was the one

that the Governor General would accept the advice of the

Prime Minister who commanded majority in the people's house

the House of Representatives. was wrong.

believe that no other construction can be placed on this action

other than that the Governor General, the Queen’s representative,

has failed to keep himself absolutely above party political

considerations and, instead, has entered the party political arena.

It saddens me tremendously to see that the people who, more

than others, should be the guardians of law and order, the

preservers of fundamental conventions, have been violators of

that law and order, and those conventions. It is more than

ever necessary that the people of Australia

should now demonstrate their ability to maintain basic conventions

without which our parliamentary democracy becomes unworkable.

The forthcoming election can in no way be viewed as party-

political election. It is an election that should transcend

party politics an election that should clearly demonstrate

the attachment of the people of ustralia to our system of

parliamentary democracy; and to the preservation of all customs

and conventions fundamental to the successful operation of that system.

This attachment can only be shown in this unprecedented election

by the return of the elected Whitlam Government.

Because of my sincere and fundamental belief in the necessity

to preserve our democratic system, urge all federation

members to do everything within their power as individual

citizens to secure the return of the Whitlam Government.

also request all members to let us know that they desire

federation as the official organ representing N.S. W.

teachers to do everything it can possibly do to secure the

preservation of proper democratic government within Australia.

Eric J. Pearson
