JOURNAL OF THE NEW SOUTH WALES TEACHERS’ FEDERATION

Vol. 58, No. 17

OCTOBER 12, 1977

Price: 30 cents

Registered at the G.P.0., Sydney for trans-

mission by post as newspaper—Category B.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE

PREMIER

Dear Mr. Wran,

We remind you of your election promise that:—

“By the year 1980 all Primary and Junior Secondary schools would have maximum class

size of 30 students and Senior Secondary Schools class size of 25.”

The teachers are available. 1000 extra will come from the CAE’s and universities and there are

nearly 1800 unemployed teachers available for work NOW!

The loan allocations for education as announced in the Treasurer’s loan speech cause serious

concern for all interested in the future of our primary and secondary schools. The increase of

7.2%, when compared with the 18% average increase, indicates major fall in priority for the

schools area. This is of great importance to parents and teachers.

The increased allocation for technical and further education is welcomed. The figure for this

area shows an increase of $6.8 million to $24.8 million as against the smaller percentage increase

for schools of only $lO million to $149 million.

Your Budget to be announced on October 12 must provide funds for the reduction of class

sizes and the employment of unemployed teachers.

Yours sincerely,

B. MANEFIELD,

President

M. TAYLOR,

General Secretary
