Fix this textFEDERATION REQUEST .
Fix this textWill you improve the quality of education by providing 20% release trom
Fix this textface-to-face teaching for infants/primary teachers and reduce teaching loads
Fix this textof secondary teachers to 25 periods?
Fix this textANSWER ....

Fix this text• Primary teachers will be given priority.
Fix this text2. Superannuation Reform
Fix this textFEDERATION REQUEST .

Fix this textall parties in 1976?
Fix this text(ii) Will you introduce age 55 retirement for men?
Fix this textANSWER ....
Fix this text(i) Our government will take steps progressively to remove discrimination
Fix this textbetween men and women in the provision of family benefits. As an
Fix this textinterim measure the Government intends to provide family benefits for
Fix this textchildren and dependent widowers of women contributors in the event of
Fix this texttheir death. The provisions in respect of children will be the same as
Fix this textapply in the case of deceased male contributors and will cover all cases
Fix this textof need, costs being met by the Government or statutory employer.
Fix this text(ii) An examination of this matter has shown that the provision of this benefit
Fix this textfor Government employees at this stage would place too great a burden
Fix this texton the community generally. The Government proposes to consider and
Fix this textto consult the appropriate organizations aS to other possible options and
Fix this textalternatives.
Fix this text3. Teacher Unemployment
Fix this textFEDERATION REQUEST
Fix this textHow will your government reduce teacher unemployment?
Fix this textANSWER
Fix this textBy pursuing, within its financial means, a balanced program that allows
Fix this textreduction of class sizes and the expansion of special services.
Fix this text4. Education Commission
Fix this textFEDERATION REQUEST
Fix this textWill you legislate for an education commission in line with federation policy?
Fix this textANSWER
Fix this textLegislation to establish an education commission will be introduced, after full
Fix this textconsideration of views expressed by all interested parties.
Fix this text5. Four-Term Year
Fix this textFEDERATION REQUEST
Fix this textWill you introduce a four-term year?
Fix this textANSWER
Fix this textThis will be determined in the light of an examination now under way. The
Fix this textoverall quality of education to be provided would be a major factor in reaching
Fix this texta decision.
Fix this text6. Class Sizes
Fix this textFEDERATION REQUEST
Fix this textWill your party act to reduce class sizes in New South Wales to maximum of
Fix this text30 in infants, primary and junior secondary and to 25 in senior secondary by
Fix this text1980 as promised by the present Government prior to the 1976 election?
Fix this textANSWER
Fix this textThe Government has made steady progress in the reduction of class sizes since
Fix this text1976.
Fix this textPrimary Schools
Fix this textAs the minister announced on September 13, the maximum pupil-teacher
Fix this textratio in schools will be reduced to range from 27:1 (in one-teacher schools)
Fix this textto 32:1 and to 25:1 (in one-teacher schools) to 30:1 in disadvantaged
Fix this textschools.
Fix this textSecondary Schools
Fix this textSince coming to government we have reduced class sizes as follows:
Fix this textYears 7 and 8, 38 to 32; Year 9, 38 to 35; Year 10, 35 to 33.
Fix this textFor disadvantaged schools the Scott Committee class size targets of 30
Fix this textfor Years 7to 10 have been achieved. Year 12 classes are already at
Fix this textthe level recommended by the Scott Committee.
Fix this textFurther betterments in secondary school staffing are proposed.
Fix this textThe matter of class sizes will continue to have very high priority.
Fix this text/fours sincerely,

Fix this textTO FEDERATION S
Fix this textPOLICY QUESTIONS
Fix this textDear Mr. Taylor,
Fix this textI attach the replies to the questions which you raised in your letter of
Fix this textAugust 25.
Fix this text1. QUALITY OF EDUCATION
Fix this textInfants and primary teachers should be given equal status and remuneration
Fix this textwith secondary teachers and there should be emphasis on training and equipping
Fix this textteachers in special areas to support primary and infants teachers.
Fix this text2. SUPERANNUATION REFORM
Fix this text• Yes-
Fix this text• We regret to say that in accordance with the advice already tendered to the
Fix this textGovernment the community is unable to bear the cost until such time as
Fix this textsome other method is devised. We would welcome any further proposals
Fix this textyour federation might have for adequate funding of such a scheme.
Fix this text3. TEACHER UNEMPLOYMENT
Fix this textThe Liberal Party Government will employ more teachers. We accepted 2,000
Fix this textmore teachers than we could find permanent positions for and this we did
Fix this textbecause we believed we had a commitment to these teachers, and secondly we
Fix this texthave declared a thorough policy which has been available for several months
Fix this textthat we are determined to increase the number of special and support teachers
Fix this textand have declared our intention to place fulltime career teachers in every high
Fix this textschool.
Fix this text4. EDUCATION COMMISSION
Fix this textNo.
Fix this text5. 4 TERM YEAR
Fix this textWe are quite willing to enter into discussions with various departments and
Fix this textsections of the community to see if this proposal can or should be implemented.
Fix this text6. CLASS SIZES
Fix this textWe committed the Liberal/Country Party Government in 1975 to a class size
Fix this textreduction program and that has remained unaltered.
Fix this textI hope these will be of assistance to you.
Fix this textWith best wishes,
Fix this textYouri sincerely
