Fix this textTaking shape at British Aerospace (BA) in Bristol, south-west England, is
Fix this textGiotto, Europe’s first space explorer. Its mission: to intercept and investigate
Fix this textthe phenomenon known as Halley’s Comet. Engineers at BA’s Space
Fix this textAssembly Building are seen working on the electrical cable harness on the
Fix this textspacecraft, due for completion in May 1984. It will be launched by the
Fix this textEuropean Space Agency (ESA) on an Ariane I rocket from Kourou, French
Fix this textGuyana, in July 1985, intercepting the comet in March 1986 at a distance of
Fix this text150 million km (93 million miles) from the earth and 133 million km (82
Fix this textmillion miles) from the sun.
Fix this textThe comet is named after Edmond Halley, the British Astronomer Royal
Fix this textwho is first identified it and calculated its orbit in 1682. Its reappearance in
Fix this text1986 after its 76-year-long orbit presents scientists with a ‘once in a lifetime’
Fix this textopportunity for its close inspection. Comets were probably created during the
Fix this textformation of the solar system. Study of their frozen nuclei may reveal
Fix this textimportant information about the nature of this event. During Giotto’s
Fix this textjourney through the comet’s surrounding coma and tail to within 500 km (310
Fix this textmiles) of its nucleus, experimental instrumentation on board will transmit to
Fix this textearth data on its chemical composition, interaction with the solar wind and
Fix this textmeasurements of its magnetic field. A camera will relay colour pictures of the
Fix this textcomet’s nucleus and coma. Giotto’s experiments will be protected during its
Fix this textfour-hour encounter with the comet by an ingenious dust shield which will
Fix this textabsorb cometary dust particles travelling at a relative velocity of more than
Fix this textfifty times the speed of a bullet and which will probably destroy the craft
Fix this texttowards the end of its journey.
Fix this textBritish Aerospace Space and Communications Division, as prime
Fix this textcontractor to the ESA for the Giotto mission, leads a team of specialist
Fix this textcontractors from ten European countries in this multi-million pound project.
Fix this textBA is responsible for the design and manufacture of the electrical cable
Fix this textharness together with integration of assembly systems and testing of both the
Fix this textGiotto electrical engineering model and the protoflight vehicle.
Fix this textThe giotto mission takes its name from the Italian painter who, having
Fix this textsighted the comet in 1301, depicted it as the Star of Bethleham in his famous
Fix this textfresco ‘The Adoration of the Magi.’
