JOURNAL OF THE NEW SOUTH WALES

TEACHERS FEDERATION

Registered by Australia Post

Vol 73 No

March 9,1992

JOBS AND TRAINING

SPOTLIGHT ON TAFE

Keating’s Economic Statement of February 26 recognised the need for

significant measures to be taken to reduce the high level of unemployment

in Australia. Major capital works projects are planned and vocational

education and training funding will be significantly increased. The

Government wants to transform TAFE across Australia into Institutes

of Vocational Education, building on existing TAFE networks. However,

it will allow flexible use of funds for both public and private providers

to encourage competition. Good news for TAFE but not so good for schools

and AMES. Funds for the Adult Migrant Education Program have been

cut by $2 million Australia wide. This will have major negative impact

on the Provision of English as Second Language courses in AMES.

If the Federal Government believes that increased English language

provision is important for economic recovery and employment it’s appalling

timing to be cutting back funding for one of the most successful providers.

There is little mention in the Economic Statement’s programs on training

and job creation of the need for increased links between schools and TAFE.

Given the plethora of committees and projects at Federal level examining

aspects of education and training at all levels, this is serious omission

from the Statement.

more detailed analysis of the Statement is in this journal.
