JOURNAL OF NEW SOUTH WALES TEACHERS FEDERATION

AGREEMENT NO PP255003 00104

V01.,75 No

h&w 23 1994

FREE AT LAST!

The NSW Teachers Federation joyfully congratulates the previously oppressed peoples of South Africa, the African

National Congress and President, Nelson Mandela on the culmination of the long and arduous struggle against

apartheid and towards democracy. The democratic ballot which has seen the first multi-racial parliament and the inaugu-

ration of the first black South African President is momentous occasion in 20th century history

Federation wishes the peoples of South Africa rapid and successful development of their new democratic society. Fed-

eration calls on the Australian Government to ensure economic and diplomatic assistance to the new South African Gov-

ernment in order to support its massive struggle to give substance to the demands of all South Africans for genuine

democracy and civil and economic rights.

Federation extends its appreciation to all teachers who worked in the union movement, anti-apartheid organisations

and progressive groups for an end to apartheid and the new beginning which has now arrived.

To commemorate this historic occasion Federation will immediately include in the negotiations on the conditions for

Teacher Exchange, the addition of South Africa to the list of countries to which teachers may go on exchange.

Further, Federation is taking immediate steps to organise in 1995 sponsored exchange of union members between Fed-

eration and its equivalent union(s) in South Africa. This process will provide specific opportunities for teachers to extend

their expertise in the area of multicultural and anti-racist education.
