JOURNAL OF THE NEW SOUTH WALES TEACHERS’ FEDERATION

Vol. 63, No.

Price: 70 cents

March 15 1982

Registered at the GPO Sydney for transmission

by post as newspaper No. N8G1213

message to members on the salaries issue

The five Public Sector Unions’

claim which sought:

restoration of lost salary

relativities since 1974

automatic quarterly adjust-

ments of salaries in line with CPI

increases

began on December 7,1981 and all

our arguments were concluded by

December 11.

Following reference from the

Government during our case, the

Full Bench on December 22

announced 4.3% increase in line

with the CPI movements in the

June and September quarters.

Members should realise that

this is only small part of our

claim. The union is still seeking

increases in the range of 10%

19% for “catch up”.

The Bench then prolonged our

case by directing us to amend our

claim to include current commun-

ity movements.

Although we sought earlier

dates and an interim decision on

our claim for “catch up” the case

did not resume again until Feb-

ruary 25.

The case for \2Vi% increase

for current wage movements was

not concluded as we had expected

on February 26.

If there are no further delays it

should conclude on March 15, and

members should receive their 4.3%

increase on April 8.

The federation is extremely

concerned that our case is now

scheduled to finish after the

hearings commence in the Nation-

al Wage Case and that this could

be used as another reason for

delay in bringing down decision

in our case.

Members are advised that we

have sought separate decision

for the two parts of our claim

decision on “catch up” to 1974

levels varying from 10% 19%

decision of approximately

12 Vi% for current wage move-

ments._

The time has come for all

members to keep fully informed

about current developments. The

Council meeting on March 20 will

be reviewing the situation and

deciding the future course of

action in this campaign. We must

ensure that the decisions awarded

provide our members and other

public servants with salary

increases to which they are justly

entitled.
