The diary contains one line entries for each day, succinctly recording the weather, events on Unumgar Station on the Richmond River in northern New South Wales. It refers to visits by neighbours, the departure of drays and station hands travelling to Ipswich, Brisbane, Toowoomba and other places and their return, the arrival of mails and stores, the mustering and slaughter of cattle, fencing, the movement of local Aboriginals, floods, horse-riding, race meetings, picnics, a Christmas dinner for Aboriginals (1868), and the birthdays and illnesses of Hale's children...
