Material filmed by the Australia Joint Copying Project includes: Minutes of Court of Directors 1784-1802 referring to applications for licences to proceed to the southern whale fishery and Register of Instruments 1735-1856 recording licences granted to ships to sail and fish within the limits of the jurisdiction of the company.

Biographical / Historical

Formed in 1711, the company was granted a monopoly of British trade with South America and the Pacific Islands. Its commercial activities ended in 1750, but it retained its exclusive privileges in the Pacific until 1807.

The minutes refer inter alia to applications for licences for ships to proceed to the southern whale fishery. They usually state the name of the ship, the names of the owners and master, the number of crew and the tonnage of the ship.
