Fix this textAUTOMATIC TELEPHONE SERVICE.
Fix this textThe following interesting description of an
Fix this textautomatic telephone service, which was some
Fix this textyears ago put into operation by The Citizens’
Fix this textTelephone Co., at Grand Rapids, Mich., U.S.A.,
Fix this textappears in a recent issue of “The Australasian
Fix this textBusiness World.” In 1905 the exchange con-
Fix this textsisted of 6283 telephones. The old -way of
Fix this texthandling calls required the service of 150 girls,
Fix this textnot one of whom is needed to operate the new
Fix this textsystem. This, we believe, is the first instance
Fix this textof a transfer from old style service ,o auto-
Fix this textmatic. The central exchange remains as of
Fix this textold, b.ut with a difference. A room-full of little
Fix this textmachines, piled tier on tier, silently awaiting
Fix this textthe call of the telephone user or busily clicking
Fix this textaway in answer to his call, has taken the place
Fix this textof the long row of nimble-fingered girls.
Fix this textIt is natural to suppose that so wonderful a
Fix this textmachine as this new telephone would be com-
Fix this textplicated, but it is not. It is held to be more
Fix this textreadily understood by a layman than an old-
Fix this textstyle “switchboard,” while the operation of call-
Fix this texting a subscriber is simple in the extreme. On
Fix this textthe front of the subscriber’s instrument is a dial
Fix this texthaving ten perforations on its edge numbered
Fix this textfrom Ito 0. To call any number it is only
Fix this textnecessary to take the receiver off its hook, and,
Fix this textplacing the finger successively in tne unit
Fix this textspaces composing the number wanted bring the
Fix this textdial around to the point where it stops auto-
Fix this textmatically. Thus, to call 9283 it would be ne-
Fix this textcessary to place the finger in the opening num-
Fix this textbered 9 and bring the dial down until it stops,
Fix this textrepeating the operation with 2,8, and 3. The
Fix this textconnection is then made, and it only remains to
Fix this text“push the button” signalling No. 9283 that they
Fix this textare wanted. This whole operation takes but
Fix this textseven seconds, and no tedious wait is neces-
Fix this textsary. If the number wanted is “busy,” a sig-
Fix this textnal—also automatic—announces tne ract, and if
Fix this textthe calling party so desires he can wait until
Fix this textthe conversation is finished, and “hold his turn,
Fix this textringing the other “party” back at once.
Fix this textIn the “central” the busy little “selector
Fix this textpasses over each number in turn, stopping at
Fix this textthe one desired. When 9283 is called. It stops
Fix this textat 9 in the “thousand” row and co:;:;ei-.8 to the
Fix this text“hundred” row, stopping there at 2, and so on,
Fix this textuntil the entire operation is completed. One
Fix this textattendant keeps the machinery in order, the
Fix this text“tell-tale,” or indicator informing him of every
Fix this text“hitch,” and showing its exact location.
Fix this textA new telephone scheme, in this day of new
Fix this textideas and new things, is as near to the heart or
Fix this textbusiness betterment as any modern time-
Fix this textsaving device. That the arrangement described
Fix this textis rea.lliy an automatic time and temper saver,
Fix this textthere is every reason to believe.
Fix this textREGISTRATION OF ARCHITECTS.
Fix this textA petition has been prepared addressed to the
Fix this textInstitute of Architects, requesting the Council
Fix this textof that body to take some steps to have a Bill
Fix this textpresented to the State Parliament to provide for
Fix this textthe registration of architects. The movement,
Fix this textwhich, we understand, emanates more particu-
Fix this textlarly from architects who are not memoers of
Fix this textthe Institute, is a step in the right direction, as
Fix this textsomething of the kind is undoubtedly needed, as
Fix this texta protection both to the profession itself and to
Fix this textthe general public. The petition can be signed
Fix this textat the office of Mr. G. A. Roberts, 76 Pitt'-si.
