Biographical / Historical

Henry Addington (1757-1844), 1st Viscount Sidmouth (created 1805), was educated at Winchester College, Brasenose College, Oxford, and Lincoln's Inn, London. Encouraged by William Pitt, he became a member of the House of Commons in 1784. He was elected Speaker in 1789. In 1801 he replaced Pitt as Prime Minister and, although he headed a caretaker ministry, he held the post until May 1804. He served as Lord President of the Council under Pitt (1805), Lord Grenville (1805-6) and Spencer Perceval (1812). In May 1812 he was appointed Home Secretary by Lord Liverpool and remained in the position until January 1822.

Francis Addington (1861-1905) was the son of William Addington, 3rd Viscount Sidmouth. He joined the Royal Navy and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1884, commander in 1896, and captain in 1903.

Midshipman Francis Addington. Log kept on H.M.S. Wolverene, (Box 76), 1 August 1876 - 18 December 1878 (File F4)

Addington was a son of the 3rd Viscount Sidmouth. The log describes the voyage from Sheerness to Sydney, via Cape of Good Hope (Aug-Dec. 1876) and service on the Australian Station, including visits to Sydney, Hobart, Wellington, Auckland, Fiji, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Lyttelton, Norfölk Island and New Caledonia. The remarks are quite detailed. There are maps and sketches of Lord Howe Island, L'Esperance and Crozet Islands. There is also a log kept on H.M.S. SapphoSappho on a voyage from Sydney to Chatham via Cape Horn, 18 Dec. 1878-1 May 1879.

Biographical / Historical

Sir John William Fortescue (1859-1933), the son of the 3rd Earl Fortescue, was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was the author of many books on military history, particularly A history of the British Army (13 vols, 1899-1930). His brother Hugh Fortescue (1854-1932), Viscount Ebrington, 4th Earl of Fortescue (succeeded 1905) visited Australia and New Zealand in 1877-78. He was a member of the House of Commons (1881-92) and Lord Lieutenant of Devon (1903-28).

Edward Adolphus Seymour (1804-1885), styled Lord Seymour, 12th Duke of Somerset (succeeded 1855), was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. He was a member of the House of Commons (1830-55). He was the First Commissioner of Works in the ministry of Lord John Russell (1851-52) and First Lord of the Admiralty in the ministry of Lord Palmerston (1859-66).

Biographical / Historical

The Gidley Family is an ancient Devonshire family which came into possession of Holcombe Manor, Winkleigh, in the seventeenth century. John Gidley (1690-1776), an attorney in Exeter, was the maternal grandfather of Philip Gidley King (1758-1808), the third governor of New South Wales.

King's grandson, Philip Gidley King (1817-1904), was the stock agent of the Australian Agricultural Company and the manager of the Peel River Company. He also became the first mayor of Tamworth, New South Wales.

John Bear and Ann Bear and their children arrived at Williamstown, Victoria, on the ship Brothers in 1841. In Melbourne John Bear established the stock and station agents, Bear & Son. His daughter Ellen Ann Bear married William Henry Dunsford (b.1813) of Tiverton.

Biographical / Historical

Sir John Palmer Bruce Chichester (1794?-1851) 1st Baronet (created 1840), of Arlington Court near Barnstaple, served in the Royal Navy from 1810 to 1820. He represented Barnstaple in the House of Commons from 1831 to 1841.

Includes circulars of Government Emigration Office and Australian Packet Ships on assistance to emigrants, note from J. Marshall to W. Jerman (Barnstable) on cost of emigration, Treasury minute sanctioning an advance to W. Hobson to cover his expenses, on his passage to New Zealand (19 July 1839), a letter from J. Stephen (Colonial Office) to J.P.B. Chichester, and a recommendation of William Jerman, blacksmith, signed by the Rector, Churchwardens and parishioners of Bratton Fleming.

George Lysaght (1840-1919), 6th Baron Lisle in the peerage of Ireland (succeeded 1898), held a commission in the South Devon Militia Artillery and served as a volunteer in the Waitako Militia in New Zealand War (1864-65). He was accompanied to New Zealand by his brother Frederick Lysaght (1841-1914)

Biographical / Historical

Sir Roper Lethbridge (1840-1919) was educated at Exeter College, Oxford, and entered the Inner Temple in 1864. He went to India in 1868 where he held various civil posts and wrote several books on Indian education and history. He was a member of the House of Commons (1885-92). His country seat was Exbourne Manor in Devon and he held office in a number of Devonshire organisations.

Letters and cuttings concerning Devonshire families resident abroad collected by Sir Roper Lethbridge while preparing his presidential address to the Devonshire Association (3 vols: 286 letters), 1901 (File)

Many of the letters are very lengthy and provide detailed family histories, recollections of Devon, accounts of emigration, and views on relations between England and their new country.
