Biographical / Historical

Florence Nightingale (1820-1910). After ten years of work with various hospitals, including training in nursing at Kaiserworth Institute, Germany, appointed Superintendent of Hospital for Invalid Gentlewomen in London in 1853. In 1854-1856 she achieved international fame as Superintendent of Female Nurses in Hospitals in the East, based at Scutari in the Crimea. Nightingale Fund was inaugurated in 1855 and it financed the establishment of the Nightingale School for Nurses at St Thomas' Hospital in 1860. Nightingale spent the rest of her life in retirement in London, but she wrote pamphlets and letters and supported many causes, including training of nurses, district nursing, and sanitary conditions in impoverished areas of both Britain and the Empire.
