This finding aid is a revised online version of the original finding aid prepared by the Australian Joint Copying Project (AJCP), published by the National Library of Australia in 2018. The original AJCP finding aids were unpublished typescripts or photocopies available from libraries that held copies of the original microfilm.
Dates used in this finding aid refer to the date range of the records selected for filming rather than to the date range of the Series or Files.
Pieces that were not filmed by the Australian Joint Copying Project have not been included in this Finding Aid.

Biographical / Historical
The partnership of Burroughs Wellcome & Co. was formed in 1880 by two American pharmacists, Silas Mainville Burroughs and Henry Solomon Wellcome. Initially they acted as agents for American companies, specialising in the new 'compressed medicines' or tablets. In 1883 they started manufacturing their own products and in 1889 the present production centre was established at Dartford, Kent. The first overseas branch was established at Melbourne in 1886.
By 1900 the product range included an extensive 'Tabloid' range of ethical medicines as well as 'Kepler' Cod liver oil and malt, hazeline Snow, Saccharin, atomisers for sprays, artificial ear drums, tea in 'tabloid' form and an assorted range of tonics and laxatives, as well as a growing range of medicine chests.
In 1895 Burroughs died and Henry Wellcome became sole proprietor. He was also interested in research and in 1894 Wellcome Physiological Research Laboratories was established, followed by Wellcome Chemical research Laboratories (1896), Wellcome Bureau of Scientific Research (1913), and Wellcome Historical Medical Museum (1913). In 1924 Wellcome consolidated all these separate enterprises under one private company - The Wellcome Foundation Ltd.
The Company's headquarters was bombed in 1941 and many records were lost.
