Biographical / Historical
The wool-buying firm of Marsden & Flower was founded in about 1829 by the Sydney merchant Thomas Marsden (1806-1837) and the English merchant Philip Flower (1809-1872). Following Marsden's death Flower came to Sydney to manage the company. In 1842 he formed a new company, Flower, Salting & Co., with the Danish-born Severin Salting (1805-1865) as his partner and John H. Challis (1806-1880) as the junior partner. Flower returned to England and a counterpart firm, P.W. Flower & Company, was established in London in 1844.Flower, Salting & Company encountered difficulties during the economic depression of the 1840s, but its fortunes prospered in the 1850s when it began to ship gold to England. For many years P.W. Flower & Company was the largest importer of Australian wool in England. Challis sold his interest in Flower, Salting & Company in 1855 and moved to England and he was followed by Salting in 1858. The three men became extremely wealthy. Philip Flower owned wharves and other properties in London and, in particular, develop an extensive estate in Battersea. His son Cyril Flower was created Baron Battersea in 1892. The firm of P.W. Flower & Company was dissolved in 1916.
