Biographical / Historical

The Institute of Physics was founded in 1918 to further the interests of professional physicists, including both industrial and academic physicists. It organized meetings, conferences and specialist groups and published various journals, including the Journal of Physics. In 1960 it amalgamated with the Physical Society (a learned society founded in 1874 and mainly composed of academic physicists) to form the Institute of Physics and the Physical Society. A Royal Charter was granted in 1970, the name being altered to the Institute of Physics.

An Australian Committee was set up in August 1924 to report on applications by Australian candidates for membership of the Institute of Physics and to convene meetings of Australian professional physicists. The Australian Branch of the Institute was founded in 1928 and its Constitution was approved in 1944. In 1962 the Australian Institute of Physics was established as an autonomous body and consequently the Australian Branch was dissolved in February 1963.
