Biographical / Historical

Thomas Dent (1796-1872) began trading as a merchant in Canton in about 1815, originally in partnership with W.S. Davidson. Thomas Dent & Company was established in 1824. The company moved to Hong Kong in 1841 and was one of the largest merchant houses in the city until it folded in 1867.

The Sun Fire Office was founded in London in 1710 and is the oldest insurance company in the world. It became the Sun Insurance Office in 1891.
