Fix this textTRADE REPORT
Fix this textSydney.
Fix this textState revenues continue to
Fix this textexpand, and despite the
Fix this textfact that ’ during the first
Fix this textquarter of the financial
Fix this textyear New South Wales re-
Fix this textreived £272,500 less from the Commonwealth
Fix this textin the way of refunds, the three months’ reve-
Fix this textnues showed an increase of close upon £92,500
Fix this textas compared with the first quarter last year.
Fix this textThe total revenue for the three months ended
Fix this textSeptember 30 amounted to £3,215,945, while
Fix this textfor the month of September the revenue was
Fix this text£1,087,257, or £ll,OOO in excess of the previous
Fix this textSeptember. The expenditure charged to
Fix this textrevenue account during the first quarter this
Fix this textyear amounted to £3,784,295, or an increase of
Fix this text£264,954 as compared with the corresponding-
Fix this textperiod last year. In addition there have been
Fix this textthe outgoings* from the Public Works and Closer
Fix this textSettlements funds, and the expenditure out of
Fix this textloan account. The chief sources of the quar-
Fix this textter’s revenue were: Land revenue, £ 463,062;
Fix this textstamps, £161,692; railways, £ 1,384,469; and
Fix this texttramways, £308,635.
Fix this textPrivate finance continues in a satisfactory
Fix this textPosition, but the uncertainty regarding the
Fix this textcoming elections is checking operations on the
Fix this textStock Exchange, investors waiting to see the
Fix this textresults, and whether the burden of taxation is
Fix this textlikely to be increased. For this reason private
Fix this textmoney at the present time is rather lying idle.
Fix this textSome extensive transactions have taken place in
Fix this textreal estate during- the week, several city pro-
Fix this textperties having changed owners, the proposed
Fix this textnew land tax already tending to force pro-
Fix this textperties on the market. Share values have also
Fix this textbeen slightly adversely influenced for much the
Fix this textsame reasons.
Fix this textThe Sydney wool sales have progressed satis-
Fix this textfactorily, the market closing the first week with
Fix this texta distinctly better tone than it opened, owing
Fix this textto the healthy conditions which marked the
Fix this textopening of the fifth series of London wool
Fix this textsales. All good wools sold freely; but faulty,
Fix this textburry, and short stapled wools have continued
Fix this textto meet with rather dragging demand. The
Fix this textgeneral opinion is that this year’s clip will not
Fix this textbe so good in quality or staple as last year.
Fix this textGreasy wool realised up to 13 %d per lb., and
Fix this textscoured to 23 x /4d. The first week’s catalogues
Fix this texttotalled 47,797 bales, of which 37,467 sold at
Fix this textauction.
Fix this textAt the sheepskin sales last week catalogues were
Fix this textextensive, but buyers operated freely, and prices
Fix this textwere well sustained for all good qualities. Kan-
Fix this textgaroo, wallaby, bear and other furred skins
Fix this textexperienced a distinctly firmer market, while
Fix this textopossum skins met with a widely distributed
Fix this textdemand, with ordinary qualities improving by
Fix this text1/- to 3/-, and best greys from 7/6 to 9/- per
Fix this textdozen. The leather market continued quiet,
Fix this textbut a slightly improved demand prevailed for
Fix this textbasils; and harness leather was in better
Fix this textrequest.
Fix this textThe butter market has eased a trifle on ac-
Fix this textcount of increased supplies coming to hand, pro-
Fix this textduction being stimulated by the recent rains and
Fix this textmild weather. Quotations have undergone no
Fix this textalterations, however, being given at 109/- per
Fix this textcwt. for choicest. Bacon and hams continue
Fix this textin small supply and have been eagerly sought
Fix this textafter.
Fix this textThe wheat market has remained lifeless,
Fix this textbuyers and sellers being unable to come together
Fix this texton the matter of prices. London markets have
Fix this textremained depressed, with little inquiry for Aus-
Fix this texttralian cargoes—so that our shippers have been
Fix this textunwilling to operate to any extent, especially as
Fix this textprices at home have been inclined to ease and
Fix this textfreights have recently advanced. Shippers’
Fix this textlimits at the present time are not above 3/9 to
Fix this text3/9 %d per bushel. Prospects for the coming
Fix this textseason continue very bright, and there is as yet
Fix this textover 3,000,000 bushels of exportable surplus still
Fix this textto be shipped away or carried over, so that
Fix this textprospects are for somewhat weaker prices. No
Fix this textmovement has occurred in flour values, but a
Fix this textfair amount of export sales have been reported,
Fix this textprincipally to the Straits and the East.
Fix this textThe import markets last week were quiet,
Fix this textwith the usual week-end conditions obtaining.
Fix this textTeas sold at low prices at auction, the local
Fix this textmarket being really to the advantage of buyers;
Fix this textand importers have lately been making losses.
Fix this textAll general groceries have moved out freely,
Fix this textwith prices well maintained. The latest reports
Fix this textfrom America respecting salmon have been that
Fix this textthe British-Columbia Packers’ Association have
Fix this texthad to discount Australian orders by 30 per
Fix this textcent., which points to still dearer markets here.
Fix this textAll fruits have sold well, and the trend of prices
Fix this texthas been towards higher levels. Rock-salt has
Fix this textbecome particularly scarce and is now worth
Fix this text60/- for Liverpool red. No alteraton has
Fix this textoccurred in linseed oil, the local market con-
Fix this texttinuing very firm. The week’s transact’ons in
Fix this textjute have been small, with prices generally
Fix this texton the weak side, especially for corn-sacks and
Fix this textwool-pacKs, the endeavours made to concentrate
Fix this textstocks of the latter goods having failed. Bran
Fix this textbags have rather improved their position owing
Fix this textto dearer Calcutta markets. The market for
Fix this textsugars has been reduced £1 per ton all round.
Fix this textIn metals there has been an ordinary trade in
Fix this textfencing wires, nettings, etc., at full rates, but
Fix this textno movements have occurred in values. Har-
Fix this textvesting and station requirements have also
Fix this textmoved out freely.
Fix this textR. G. Dun & Co’s
Fix this textTRADE REPORT
Fix this textMelbourne.
Fix this textOctober 5, 1910.
Fix this textAmongst the indications of
Fix this textthe increase in Australian
Fix this texttrade in general, and Vic-
Fix this texttorian trade in particular,
Fix this texthave been the official re-
Fix this textturns of imports and exports issued during- the
Fix this textlast two or three months, which have shown
Fix this textcontinued expansion when compared with the
Fix this textfigures of a year back. The August returns for
Fix this textthe Commonwealth show an increase of over
Fix this texta million sterling in imports of merchandise,
Fix this textwhich totalled £5,904,891, against £4,871,397,
Fix this textand an increase of about a million and a third
Fix this textin exports of merchandise, which amounted to
Fix this text£4,071,267 against £2,728,014. The increase in
Fix this textexports is a continuation of what has been in
Fix this textprogress for a considerable time past, and re-
Fix this textflects the condition of the great producing in-
Fix this textdustries of the country. The expansion in
Fix this textimport trade forms an index to the general ex-
Fix this textpansion of business throughout the Common-
Fix this textwealth, the recent succession of good seasons
Fix this texthaving given a considerable stimulus to enter-
Fix this textprise. The increase in imports has been espe-
Fix this textcially marked in July and August, which were
Fix this textlarger than in the same months last year by
Fix this text£1,146,816 and £1,033,494 respectively, or a
Fix this texttotal increase of £2,180,310 in the two months.
Fix this textThe chance that alterations in duties might
Fix this texthave been proposed has probably had something
Fix this textto do with these large movements, but in the
Fix this textmain they are due to the actual increase in the
Fix this textvolume of trade to be done. The total imports
Fix this textof merchandise into Australia during the first
Fix this texteight months of the year amount to £ 37,300,321,
Fix this textor an increase of £5,615,401 as compared with
Fix this textthe first eight months of 1909; and exports of
Fix this textmerchandise for the same period amount to
Fix this text£38,574,762, or an increase of £8,428,549.
Fix this textAgainst this is to be set a decrease of nearly
Fix this textthree millions in exports of gold and specie.
Fix this textExpansion also continues to be shown by
Fix this textthe Customs and Excise revenue, the total for
Fix this textthe Commonwealth for September being
Fix this text£1,017,287, or an increase of £ 121,584 over Sep-
Fix this texttember, 1909. During the first three months
Fix this textof the financial year the total is £ 3,301,257, or
Fix this textan increase of £378,099, the increase in Victoria
Fix this textalone being £11,125, and in New South Wales
Fix this text£136,191. These increases during the quarter
Fix this textreflect the larger volume of imports, while there
Fix this texthave probably been some precautionary clear-
Fix this textances against the chance of Tariff changes.
Fix this textTrade in Melbourne continues generally good,
Fix this textIt's easy and takes two shakes of a lamb's tail!
