Fix this textTRADE REPORT
Fix this textSydney.
Fix this textTaking all things into consideration, last month
Fix this textsaw trade conditions somewhat improved. Ihe
Fix this texttimely rains greatly benefited crops and pastur-
Fix this textage, and generally brightened up our primary in-
Fix this textdustries, and with prospects for a fine season
Fix this textahead, there has been an inclination to purchase
Fix this textmore freely. Although the small-pox outbreak has not been stamped
Fix this textout, it has kept so consistently mild that practically all the scaie has
Fix this textdied away, and its effects upon trade is now infinitesimal. Sydney is
Fix this textnow pretty fuM of visitors, attracted here by the Spring race-meeting
Fix this textand the arrival of the Australian fleet celebrations, so that retailers
Fix this textand shopkeepers have been doing good business.
Fix this textThe trade returns for the eight months show a gradual progression.
Fix this textThe imports into New South Wales for the eight months have amounted
Fix this textto £20,933,669, or an increase of £ 129,337 as compared with the corre-
Fix this textsponding period last year. Of that total, over £20,300,000 represented
Fix this textimports of merchandise. The exports for the first eight months to-
Fix this texttalled £17,441,043, or a decrease of £1,226,887. That, on the surface,
Fix this textlooks like retrogression, but, on analysis, the position is not as bad
Fix this textas it appears. The shipments of merchandise for the eight months
Fix this textamounted to £16,559,568, or close upon £1,000,000 in excess of the
Fix this textcorresponding period last year, and it was the export of gold which
Fix this textwas curtailed, the shipments showing a contraction of over £2,222,000.
Fix this textBy the end of the year, if present prospects are realised, the balance
Fix this textbetween imports and exports should be on the outward side. The
Fix this textState revenue last month again showed an increase to £1,387,564 —a
Fix this textgain of £179,579, while for the first quarter the revenue has yielded
Fix this text£3,916,810, or an increase of £409,848 as compared with the corre-
Fix this textsponding quarter last year. All the business undertakings in the
Fix this textrevenue account were productive of larger returns, while on the Gov-
Fix this texternmental side, Commonwealth refunds, stamps and income tax showed
Fix this textconsiderable expansion.
Fix this textThe Sydney wool sales have progressed satisfactorily, the market
Fix this textbeing distinctly firmer than when it opened. The catalogues likewise
Fix this textnow are larger in size and better in quality. Competition has been ani-
Fix this textmated and well distributed, although French and German buyers have
Fix this textbeen the largest operators. The catalogues offered at auction so far
Fix this textthis season have amounted to 95,921 bales, of which 82,423 bales were
Fix this textsold under the hammer. Adding private transactions, the sales have
Fix this texttotalled 100,693 bales. The corresponding totals last year were: Of-
Fix this textfered, 64,031 bales; sold at auction, 58,499 bales; total sales, 69,471 bales.
Fix this textAccording to Dalgety & Co., the increase in the Australasian wool clip
Fix this textthis year will only be 160,000 bales, while the total clip is set down
Fix this textat 2,247,000 bales, made up as follows:
Fix this textBales.
Fix this textNew South Wales 851,000
Fix this textVictoria 301,000
Fix this textQueensland 320,000
Fix this textSouth Australia 140,000
Fix this textWest Australia 72,000
Fix this textTasmania 34,000
Fix this textCommonwealth 1,718,000
Fix this textNew Zealand 529,000
Fix this textAustralasia 2,247,000
Fix this textThe wheat market has passed through an uneventful week, the
Fix this texttendency of prices being still downwards. Quotations for Australian
Fix this textcargoes in Dondon have fallen to between 36/- and 36/3 per quarter,
Fix this textwith little or no inquiry. The prices for “futures” in Liverpool and
Fix this textChicago continue to favour the buyer as well. Sydney shippers have
Fix this texttherefore had little encouragement to launch out into fresh buying,
Fix this textand, in view of the high freights, reduced their buying limits to 3/6%
Fix this textand' 3/7, with very few willing to give the higher figure. Stacks on
Fix this textcountry stations have now been reduced to just under 520,000 bags, and
Fix this textthere seems little offering by farmers. The exports have approximated
Fix this text14,000,080 bushels. Harvest prospects are very bright since the rains.
Fix this textThe production of butter is increasing, but the demand both for
Fix this textlocal consumption and export has been active, so that quotations have
Fix this textkept firm at 107/- per cwt, for choicest and up to 105/- for seconds.
Fix this textThe market for eggs has become a very dear one, on account of their
Fix this textscarcity. A large shortage is predicted for Christmas requirements.
Fix this textIt's easy and takes two shakes of a lamb's tail!
