TRADE REPORT

Sydney.

Taking all things into consideration, last month

saw trade conditions somewhat improved. Ihe

timely rains greatly benefited crops and pastur-

age, and generally brightened up our primary in-

dustries, and with prospects for fine season

ahead, there has been an inclination to purchase

more freely. Although the small-pox outbreak has not been stamped

out, it has kept so consistently mild that practically all the scaie has

died away, and its effects upon trade is now infinitesimal. Sydney is

now pretty fuM of visitors, attracted here by the Spring race-meeting

and the arrival of the Australian fleet celebrations, so that retailers

and shopkeepers have been doing good business.

The trade returns for the eight months show gradual progression.

The imports into New South Wales for the eight months have amounted

to £20,933,669, or an increase of £ 129,337 as compared with the corre-

sponding period last year. Of that total, over £20,300,000 represented

imports of merchandise. The exports for the first eight months to-

talled £17,441,043, or decrease of £1,226,887. That, on the surface,

looks like retrogression, but, on analysis, the position is not as bad

as it appears. The shipments of merchandise for the eight months

amounted to £16,559,568, or close upon £1,000,000 in excess of the

corresponding period last year, and it was the export of gold which

was curtailed, the shipments showing contraction of over £2,222,000.

By the end of the year, if present prospects are realised, the balance

between imports and exports should be on the outward side. The

State revenue last month again showed an increase to £1,387,564 —a

gain of £179,579, while for the first quarter the revenue has yielded

£3,916,810, or an increase of £409,848 as compared with the corre-

sponding quarter last year. All the business undertakings in the

revenue account were productive of larger returns, while on the Gov-

ernmental side, Commonwealth refunds, stamps and income tax showed

considerable expansion.

The Sydney wool sales have progressed satisfactorily, the market

being distinctly firmer than when it opened. The catalogues likewise

now are larger in size and better in quality. Competition has been ani-

mated and well distributed, although French and German buyers have

been the largest operators. The catalogues offered at auction so far

this season have amounted to 95,921 bales, of which 82,423 bales were

sold under the hammer. Adding private transactions, the sales have

totalled 100,693 bales. The corresponding totals last year were: Of-

fered, 64,031 bales; sold at auction, 58,499 bales; total sales, 69,471 bales.

According to Dalgety Co., the increase in the Australasian wool clip

this year will only be 160,000 bales, while the total clip is set down

at 2,247,000 bales, made up as follows:

Bales.

New South Wales 851,000

Victoria 301,000

Queensland 320,000

South Australia 140,000

West Australia 72,000

Tasmania 34,000

Commonwealth 1,718,000

New Zealand 529,000

Australasia 2,247,000

The wheat market has passed through an uneventful week, the

tendency of prices being still downwards. Quotations for Australian

cargoes in Dondon have fallen to between 36/- and 36/3 per quarter,

with little or no inquiry. The prices for “futures” in Liverpool and

Chicago continue to favour the buyer as well. Sydney shippers have

therefore had little encouragement to launch out into fresh buying,

and, in view of the high freights, reduced their buying limits to 3/6%

and' 3/7, with very few willing to give the higher figure. Stacks on

country stations have now been reduced to just under 520,000 bags, and

there seems little offering by farmers. The exports have approximated

14,000,080 bushels. Harvest prospects are very bright since the rains.

The production of butter is increasing, but the demand both for

local consumption and export has been active, so that quotations have

kept firm at 107/- per cwt, for choicest and up to 105/- for seconds.

The market for eggs has become very dear one, on account of their

scarcity. large shortage is predicted for Christmas requirements.
