TRADE REPORT

Sydney.

Nature during the week has been in bounteous

mood. Further fine rains have fallen, and it can

be safely said that New South Wales is in for

splendid harvest. Already new wheat has reached

Sydney. The wool-clip is being rapidly dealt with,

season and goo<4 Prices, while the blessings of the

The na^ura^y been bestowed upon our other primary products,

the °° ’ ere^orc is rosy, and trade during the latter portion of

S^ brighten considerably. The only disturbing feature

at present Position is the stringency of the Government finances

at present time.

The • over sea trade returns last month showed distinct expansion.

Corn lmparts am ounted to £3,080,492, or an increase of £251,622 as

re with September, 1912. For the nine months of the current

year the imports have totalled £24,064,161, or £380,959 in excess of

mont h° SP ° f7 eriod last year. The exports from this State last

mounted to £2,849,338, or an increase of £457,194 over the

£2 Vl ,r tembe J- The total ex P° rts for the nine months represented

£20,200,431, or decrease of £769,693. But as we pointed out when

th6 61ght ° nths ’ figures the shrinkage was in the gold

last ve?r w^n tu W6re £2 ’ 638 ’ 857 less than the corresponding period

the ™ exports of merchandise were £ 1,869,164 ahead of

the corresponding nine months, and totalled £19,238,136.

The nine months’ trade returns for the Commonwealth disclose the

same set of conditions. The imports totalled £57,448,595, or an in-

crease of £51,253, while the exports amounted to £ 48,785 605 de-

crease of just over £2,000,000. But, as compared with last year, the

shipments of merchandise increased £6,417,000, and the gold exports

decreased £8,465,000 on the nine months.

The Sydney wool sales were renewed on Monday after week’s

respite, to permit the buyers attending the Brisbane sales. The cata-

logues offered during the week have been extensive, and the market

generally firm for all but faulty wools. Continental operators have

continued the main-stay of the market, although Yorkshire, Japanese

and local manufacturers have purchased with rather more freedom.

Indications point to prices being well maintained. Shearing in this

State is drawing to close. The dealings in the Sydney market since

July last have been as follows:

1912-13. 1913-14.

Ca fa ine'iipfl Bales. Bales.

Catalogued 177,043 .. 214,667

Sold at Auction 104 774 499 747

Private Sales 15 569 28 i00

Total Sales 180,340 .. 218,847

The shipments of wool from Sydney and Newcastle so far this season

have totalled 208,348 bales, as compared with 156,379 bales last season.

Trading in wheat during the week has been limited, shippers in

Sydney have received no encouragement from the London side, where

cargoes have been neglected and values depreciated. Canada has been

offering to sell wheat at low rates, and has thus weakened the London

market. Quotations for “futures” in both Chicago and Liverpool have

fallen sharply. At the time of writing, latest cables advise adverse

reports concerning the Argentine crops, and London values have

steadied. In Sydney, the top price for Southern wheat prompt de-

livery has been 3/6 per bushel, and few buyers, while for prime old

Western grain 3/6% per bushel has been wanted. Operations in new

wheat have been put through at from 3/5 to 3/6 for January to

April, and 3/6% for April to June. Flour has been quiet at unchanged

levels, bnt official quotations for bran and pollard have been reduced

5/-, making the price now £4/5/- per ton.

In the market for dairy produce, the chief movement has been

decline of 4/- per cwt. in butter values, choicest now selling at 103/-

per cwt. Supplies have increased rapidly of late and stocks begun to

accumulate. Cheese has likewise been in liberal supply, with re-

sultant decline of %d. recorded in prices.

Forage and feed grains have received moderate attention, but the

plentitude of feed throughout the State has meant lessened demand
