TRADE REPORT

Sydney.

The revenue for New South Wales during October

continued to show expansion, the month’s receipts

amounting to £1,502,798, or an increase of £124,196

as compared with the corresponding month last

year. If the rate of increase that has characterised

the first four months of the current financial year

Was keep going on for the entire twelve months, there would, at

its close, be gain of about £1,500,000, but that, of course, is quite

The revenue collections for the first four months have

Aggregated £5,419,609, the increase on the corresponding period being

4,045. The railways, trammays and other business undertakings

have yielded the greatest additions, but material increases were gained

through stamp duties, income-tax and Commonwealth refunds. The

expenditure out of revenue proper totalled £6,465,348 for the four

months an increase of only £176,953 as compared with the corres-

ponding period last year. But, then, the outgoings of the railways and

other business undertakings were materially reduced, although their

expenses, particularly in respect to wages, were increased. Payments

to the Public Works’ Fund were likewise cut down, as were those

in reduction of the public debt. The expenditure out of loan accounts

showed very great increase, the four months’ outgoings amounting

to close upon £3,000,000, or £1,637,569 in excess of the four months

in 1912. Treasury balances have likewise been reduced.

The week’s trading conditions have been satisfactory, although

it is too early in the month for business to display any marked activity.

Still, the prospects point to an enlarged turnover in all directions

later on, as the harvest is now practically assured and the season for

our other primary industries has been just as generous. Consequently,

our exports of all descriptions of produce must increase, the balance

of trade sway more in our favour, and individual wealth accrue.

The Sydney wool market has been characterised by an exceed-

ingly firm tone for all the finer descriptions, but for faulty wools,

depreciation in values has occurred. Buyers are evidently not anxious

for those descriptions and, as compared with the rates ruling fort-

night ago, faulties have come back to the extent of per cent, to

per cent. Competition has proved animated, especially amongst

the Continental section, but Yorkshire buyers have operated spas-

modically. Wools have been arriving freely, and the catalogues have

embraced much wider selection, which has been appreciated by the

buyers. Operations so far this season on the Sydney market compare

with those for the corresponding period last year as follows:

1912-13. 1913-14.

Bales. Bales.

Catalogued 199,804 .. 264,928

Sold at Auction *. .. 185,807 .. 235,492

Private Sales 17,990 .. 33,507

Total Sales 203,797 .. 268,999

Wheat operators have been making ready for the new campaign.

London values have been weak and declining for some time past, so

that shippers on this side have been but small operators, and the

fact that “futures” have likewise sagged rendered speculators nervous.

Latest cabled intelligence, however, has advised of some improvement

in the English markets on the news of adverse weather conditions

in the Argentine. Sydney buyers have been paying most attention to

new wheat, which, for January to March deliveries, has sold at 3/5%

per bushel on trucks Sydney. For April, May, June deliveries, 3/6 has

been paid, while an extra %d. per bushel has been forthcoming for

delivery right up to September next. But farmers have not been over

anxious to speculate so far ahead. Business in old wheat has been

effected at 3/6 per bushel for Southern, and 3/6% for prime Western

grain. The stackings on country stations have dwindled down to
