TRADE REPORT

Sydney.

Trade conditions have disclosed no new features

during the week. Business in most directions has

been well maintained, but considering the good

season experienced, there has not been the activity

in business which was anticipated. The money

market has continued tight, while the close ap-

proach to the end of the year has doubtless tended to confine pur-

chasing more to immediate wants, as wholesalers do not usua

10 stock up at such time. Still, prospects have kept rosy, and wi

the quarantine embargo raised, inter-State trade should increase,

On the Sydney Stock Exchange, investments have met with

firm and active market. Holders of sound dividend-paying securities

have displayed no disposition to unload, save at advances on current

prices. On the other hand, the mining market has been lifeless, the

weakness in industrial metals being accountable for great deal

of the depression.

The course of the Sydney wool sales has been marked by some-

what weaker tone for medium and faulty wools, especially for earthy

and heavy-conditioned sorts, the yield of which has proved disappoint-

ing. The finer qualities of merinos and crossbreds have ruled par-

ticularly firm, while comeback and lambs’ wool have sold freely enough.

Competition has proved animated, with Continental buyers still well

to the fore. Yorkshire operators have been more in evidence. The

catalogues have been extensive, and, considering the flush of supplies,

clearances at auction have been satisfactory. The season’s record

from greasy wool, i.e., 16d. per lb., was obtained during the week.

Operations in the Sydney market since July to date compare with

those of the previous season for the corresponding period as follows:- —

1912-13. 1913-14.

Bales. Bales.

Catalogued •• 293,146 .. 362,623

Sold at Auction 274,790 .. 323,730

Private Sales 23,339 .. 39,878

Total Sales .. 298,129 .. 363,608

The shipments of wool from Sydney and Newcastle have amounted to

314,030 bales—an increase of 67,240 bales as compared with the pre-

vious season to the same date.

Transactions in the Sydney wheat market have been only mode-

rately brisk for the time of year. Farmers have not shown much

inclination to sell at the prices offering. Shippers, in view of the

comparative slowness of the London market, have kept their buying

limits in the region of 3/5% per bushel Sydney for January-March

deliveries, and 3/6% per bushel for January-June. fair amount

of business has been effected at those prices, but chiefly in small

quantities, as holders have wanted more money in most quarters. Just

recently the London market has improved on adverse weather con-

ditions reported from India and Argentina. Also on account of

disappointing French and German harvest. Farmers now ask 3/6 per

bushel for January-March deliveries. Some further trouble has arisen

among the wheat workers at Darling Island, the union demanding

an increase in the number of men to gang. Shippers have refused

to comply with those demands, and loading has been virtually sus-

pended, save from trucks to vessels direct. New season’s wheat is

commencing to come in more freely.

Business in dairy produce lines has been brisk, and prices gene-

rally steady. No movement has occurred in butter, choicest quality

still selling at 103/' per cwt, Second qualities have been slow to
