TRADE REPORT

Sydney.

The New South Wales revenue for the first five

months of the financial year still displays the

satisfactory increase. The collections for Novem-

ber amounted to £1,367,741, showing an increase

of £130,943, as compared with the corresponding

month last year. The five months’ collections have

aggregated £6,887,250, or an expansion of £664,988. The principal

increases have been Commonwealth refunds, railways and tramways,

income tax, and Metropolitan Water Board Sewerage. The revenue

for stamps has also yielded better. But the expenditure has out-vied

the intakiugs. The payments out Of revenue proper last month

amounted to £1,128,751, or an increase of £129,388 over the corre-

sponding month of last year. For the five months, the expenditure

out of revenue proper has amounted to £7,593,099; but there'

is the expenditure out of loan account to take into considera-

tion as well. That has amounted to £3,662,196, showing an increase

of £515,824 over the corresponding period last year; and yet that

account has benefited to the extent of £2,000,000 in Treasury bill just

placed in London. The payments made to closer settlement and pub-

lic works funds have shown substantial increase, but the monies placed

to their credit have been very materially curtailed.

On the Sydney Stock Exchange, leading investments have come in

for an increased amount of inquiry. In fact, buyers have completely

overshadowed sellers. Not so in the mining section. The continued

depreciation of industrial metals in England, combined with the utter

lack of speculation, has further depreciated values in nearly all sections.

It is not expected that there will be any vitality in the mining market

prior to the opening of the Exchange after the Christmas recess.

The progress of the Sydney wool sales has been characterised by

very firm market for all the finer qualities of merinos, comebacks

and lambs’ wool. Greasy crossbreds have been somewhat easier, while

the market for inferior and faulty wool has depreciated. Competition,

has been widespread, hut the pride of place still remains with the

Continental operators. Japanese buyers and local manufacturers have

displayed more activity, and Yorkshires have bought on somewhat

increased scale. American buyers have also been in evidence during

the week. The operations of the Sydney market since the commence-

ment of the new season have been as follows:

1912-13. 1913-14.
