Fix this textThe New South Wales revenue for the first five
Fix this textmonths of the financial year still displays the
Fix this textsatisfactory increase. The collections for Novem-
Fix this textber amounted to £1,367,741, showing an increase
Fix this textof £130,943, as compared with the corresponding
Fix this textmonth last year. The five months’ collections have
Fix this textaggregated £6,887,250, or an expansion of £664,988. The principal
Fix this textincreases have been Commonwealth refunds, railways and tramways,
Fix this textincome tax, and Metropolitan Water Board & Sewerage. The revenue
Fix this textfor stamps has also yielded better. But the expenditure has out-vied
Fix this textthe intakiugs. The payments out Of revenue proper last month
Fix this textamounted to £1,128,751, or an increase of £129,388 over the corre-
Fix this textsponding month of last year. For the five months, the expenditure
Fix this textout of revenue proper has amounted to £7,593,099; but there'
Fix this textis the expenditure out of loan account to take into considera-
Fix this texttion as well. That has amounted to £3,662,196, showing an increase
Fix this textof £515,824 over the corresponding period last year; and yet that
Fix this textaccount has benefited to the extent of £2,000,000 in Treasury bill just
Fix this textplaced in London. The payments made to closer settlement and pub-
Fix this textlic works funds have shown substantial increase, but the monies placed
Fix this textto their credit have been very materially curtailed.
Fix this textOn the Sydney Stock Exchange, leading investments have come in
Fix this textfor an increased amount of inquiry. In fact, buyers have completely
Fix this textovershadowed sellers. Not so in the mining section. The continued
Fix this textdepreciation of industrial metals in England, combined with the utter
Fix this textlack of speculation, has further depreciated values in nearly all sections.
Fix this textIt is not expected that there will be any vitality in the mining market
Fix this textprior to the opening of the Exchange after the Christmas recess.
Fix this textThe progress of the Sydney wool sales has been characterised by
Fix this texta very firm market for all the finer qualities of merinos, comebacks
Fix this textand lambs’ wool. Greasy crossbreds have been somewhat easier, while
Fix this textthe market for inferior and faulty wool has depreciated. Competition,
Fix this texthas been widespread, hut the pride of place still remains with the
Fix this textContinental operators. Japanese buyers and local manufacturers have
Fix this textdisplayed more activity, and Yorkshires have bought on a somewhat
Fix this textincreased scale. American buyers have also been in evidence during
Fix this textthe week. The operations of the Sydney market since the commence-
Fix this textment of the new season have been as follows:
