TRADE REPORT

Sydney.

The revenue for New South Wales during March

amounted to £1,314,100, or an increase of only

£19,982 as compared with the corresponding month

last year- This is by far the smallest increase in

any of the previous month’s totals during the cur-

rent financial year- The total revenue for the first

nine months has amounted to £11,4-07,155,' or £199,081 in excess of

the corresponding period last year- Last month railway revenue totalled

£594,405 (increase, £50,077); tramways totalled £162,856 (increase,

£25,414); and income tax £9,653 (increase, £!8,032. The increases were

trivial- During the month the revenue derived from stamps showed

shrinkage of £31,097, and land revenue £19,295- There were several

other minor decreases as well- From the figures reproduced hereunder

it would appear that the State revenues have reached the limit of

their productiveness-

Nine months .. 11,208,074 .. 11,407,155 .. Inc-199,081

Trading throughout the week has been restricted owing to the

Easter holidays, fact plainly shown in the Sydney banks’ clearing

returns, which only amounted to £ 3,426,869- Last year, however, did

not include the holidays- However, prospects continue satisfactory.

T'he country has further benefited by additional autumnal rains, so the

pastures for the winter should be abundant, and the lambing increased-

Very distinct advances have also ibeen reported by cables from London

in the prices of industrial metals, which should stimulate production

here by an added value to our output. Also- there has been some

easing in the London and Continental money markets- In Sydney the

stringency in the monetary position has shown little signs of abating-

The local wool market has continued in “status quo,” that is to say,

there have been no auction sales in Sydney, and the only wool avail-

able has been confined to fellmongers’ parcels- The new wool arriving

has been placed into stores, pending the auctions to commence on

April Bth- Buyers have been away this week, attending the Brisbane

sales, at which some 13,000 bales are expected to be offered- The

tone of the market continues extremely firm, and buyers have readily

snapped up all available parcels. The decrease in our clips has become

even more noticeable. The arrivals into Sydney by rail have amounted

to 593,794 bales, decrease of 110,466 bales, and hy boat to 73,238

bales, decrease of 13,262, or total shrinkage of 123,728 bales- Busi-

ness in wheat during the week has been rather quiet, though the last

few days were marked by more activity, principally the adjusting of

March cancellations- Shippers have been operating quietly during the

week, and would readily pay 3/8 per bushel on trucks Sydney for prompt

delivery, and in some cases fraction more- The export market has

been given slight fillip by reason of better inquiry for cargoes in

London, and lower freights- The latest sales of Victorian and New-

South Wales cargoes reported in London were at 38/- and 38/3 per

quarter respectively- The 30,000,000 bushel harvest is still matter

cf good deal of controversy- Our exports up to date, counting what

has gone over the Victorian border, have amounted to 6,000,000 bushels

approximately- Flour has sold in average quantities at unaltered levels-

Bran and pollard have been reduced 57- and 10/- per ton respectively-

Since the rise in choicest butter to 108/- per cwt. the export de-

mand has not been so active in England, but West Australian orders

have continued on this market. Eggs have weakened since an Easter

rush, but bacon and hams have kept firm- All forage lines have been

exceedingly quiet, but with the new month established, merchants

anticipate an increased turnover- Fencing materials have shown some

improvement in manufacturing centres, and for this reason local holders

are not desirous to cut rates, and better demand should stiffen the

market here- The grocery trade has been resting after the Easter

trade, though country orders for the first have been good, and the

distributing houses have been busy executing. In jute, there has been

and continues squeeze in deliveries for bran bags ex the “Itonus,"

and holders have pushed the price up to 7/6- February shipments bid

fair to meet with similar experience*. Cornsacks and wool packs have

ruled quiet but steady.
