MONTHLY MAGAZINE OF THE 30th BATTALION,

N.S.W. SCOTTISH REGIMENT.

HEADQUARTERS, DRILL HALL, MILLER'S POINT, SYDNEY.

Commanding Officer: Lt.-Col. H. B. TAYLOR, M.C., V.D.

VOL. |, No. 9! JUNE. 1936. PRICE, 3d.

FROMELLES

The article in the last issue of "The Highlander" brings

to mind slight personal association with the area.

Much bitter controversy has centred round the Battle of

Fromelles. The diversion was intended to relieve the pressure

on the Somme Front, and this it undoubtedly did. To deal

with this new threat, the German was compelled to divert

divisions on their way to the Somme at critical stage of

that offensive.

It was not the task that has been questioned. But the

cost naturally provoked criticism. The casualties amounted

to 5,533, mostly sustained on the one day. To Australia

this meant the decimation of the sth Division?a tragic toll

for demonstration which was first intended in the nature

of great bluff.

By strange anomaly the engagement took place in

sector, generally one of the quietest of the British front, to

which new divisions were sent to receive their baptism of

trench conditions in France. This breaking-in ground has

given at least one identity to posterity, for it was in the

Northern portion that Mademoiselle from Armentieres held

sway.

There was very little major activity. Snipers pinged, and

machine guns habitually chattered; now and again trench

mortar battery stirred things up; the artillery units ex-

changed pleasantries; or an occasional raid took place?(no

picnic party, this!).

To the veterans of Gallipoli, however, it seemed compara-

tively idyllic. But amongst the Australian Divisions in early

1916 there were many reinforcements as yet untried, and this

experience was given as necessary introduction to the more
