MONTHLY MAGAZINE OF THE 30th BATTALION,

N.S.W. SCOTTISH REGIMENT.

HEADQUARTERS, DRILL HALL, MILLER'S POINT. SYDNEY.

Commanding Officer: Lt.-Col. H. B. TAYLOR, M.C., V.D.

VOL. 2. No. 2. AUGUST, 1936. PRICE, 3d

History of the 30th Battalion, A.I.F.

(By LIEUT-COLONEL H. SLOAN.)

Before the "Beltana" left the wharf the battalion was visited

by the Archbishop of Sydney (Dr. Wright), who moved from

deck to deck among the men, speaking kindly words of encourage-

ment to small groups here and there, finally shaking by the hand

as many individuals as was possible. When anchored in the stream

the Governor-General (Sir Ronald Munro-Ferguson) came aboard

and in short address complimented the troops upon the orderly

embarkation and their appearance generally. He referred to the

importance of our mission, but was confident of the eventual out-

come. His remarks were well received by all ranks and on mov-

ing down the gangway he was loudly cheered.

Included on the strength of "A" Company were Lieuts. C. J.

Walker and W. Webber, whose names were inadvertently omitted

from the previous list. These officers, together with Lieuts.

Orpen and Hext, also ex-Naval Reserve officers, were posted to

"A" Company, and, as the other ranks of this unit largely com-

prised ex-naval ratings, happy understanding between officers

and men was brought about. The 0.C., Major Beardsmore, soon

became familiar with the naval terms, which, through force of

habit, his officers and N.C.O.'s occasionally used.

There was no illusion among our men as to the serious nature

of their undertaking. At the outbreak of war financial "experts'

had declared that no European war could last more than three

months, but subsequent events had dispelled ideas of this nature.

The "Beltana" carried details of other arms of the service as

well as the 30th Battalion, and Colonel Clark was given command

of them all for the period of the voyage. Captain Sloan was

appointed ship's adjutant. In consequence, Major C. J. Holford

temporarily assumed command of the 30th, with Lieut. F. M.

Couchman as his adjutant.

The sea being calm, officers and men soon settled down to

shipboard routine. Reveille was sounded at a.m. Breakfast

was taken by the troops at 7.30 a.m., dinner at noon, and tea at
