Scope and Contents

Diaries and commonplace book 1854-1855 of Francis M. Lind (b.1822). The diary describes the voyage from Calcutta to Sydney via Singapore, Adelaide and Melbourne. The commonplace book contains notes and cuttings concerning the meetings of New Zealand chiefs at Auckland following the murder of Te Kopi.

A Letter 7 August 1957 from H.D. London to J. Crisp concerning the Maori War 1865-1870.

A Diary June-November 1836 kept by Col. W. Harry Christie on a voyage from Gravesend to Sydney on the Captain Cook.

Biographical / Historical

Francis Macan Lind (1822-1879) was born in Calcutta. In 1849 he married Jane Portia Barney, the daughter of Captain George Barney, the Chief Commissioner of Crown Lands and later Surveyor-General in New South Wales.

Diary of a visit to Australia and New Zealand on leave from the Indian Army (81pp), 13 February 1854 - 31 August 1855 (File 1)

The diary describes the voyage from Calcutta to Sydney via Singapore, Adelaide and Melbourne, travels in the New England district in November-December 1854 and in New Zealand in February - April 1855, and the return voyage to India via Torres Strait. It includes notes on New Zealand government, Maoris, the Maori War, and geology, and also sketches and a map.

The diary contains detailed entries describing the layout of the ship, daily routine, relations with the crew, deaths, an attempt by convicts to seize the ship, lashings, fishing, convict songs, birds, and his first impressions of Sydney.

Biographical / Historical

Captain William Harvie Christie (1808-1873) of the 80th Regiment commanded an escort of 45 soldiers on the convict ship Captain Cook, commanded by George W. Brown, on its voyage from London to Sydney in 1836. He left the Army in 1839 and later held a number of civil posts in New South Wales.

Major Francis Aylmer Maxwell (1871-1917) served in the South African War, where he won a Victoria Cross in 1900. He was appointed aide-de camp to Lord Kitchener in 1901 and accompanied him to India in 1902. He was appointed military secretary to the Lord Hardinge, the Viceroy of India, in 1910.

Biographical / Historical

Charles Swanston (1789-1850) served in the Madras establishment of the East India Company's army. He visited Van Diemen's Land while on leave in 1829 and on his return to India resigned his commission. He acquired land in Van Diemen's Land and in 1831 became director of the Derwent Bank. In 1835 he as a member of the Port Phillip Association and in 1844 began trading as a merchant at Geelong.

Biographical / Historical

William Murrell Lummis (1886-1985) enlisted in the 11th Hussars in 1904 and served on the Western Front throughout World War I. He retired from the Army in 1930 and was ordained a priest in the Anglican Church. He wrote a number of books on military history and assembled a large archive on Victoria Cross winners.
