MONTHLY MAGAZINE OF THE 30th BATTALION,

N.S.W. SCOTTISH REGIMENT.

HEADQUARTERS, DRILL HALL, MILLER'S POINT. SYDNEY.

Commanding Officer: Lt.-Col. H. B. TAYLOR, M.C., V.D.

Vol. 2. No. 5. NOVEMBER, 1936. PRICE, 3d.

Incidents in the Life of the

30th Battalion, AJ.F.

(By LIEUT.-COLONEL H. SLOAN.)

CHAPTER V.

ALTHOUGH, as stated in the previous chapter, the duties at Ferry

Post during our first sojourn there were fairly strenuous,

number of incidents occurred to relieve the monotony which may

be worth recording.

It will be remembered that large force of Turks had invaded

Egypt in this neighbourhood during the earlier months of 1915, appar-

ently with the view to seizing the important railway junction of Ismalia,

visible evidence of which was forthcoming in the shape of shot perfor-

ated steel boats which were left stranded on the shores of Lake Timsah.

Some of our enterprising signallers, who, with platoon of infantry,

were stationed at Ridge Post and Benchmark '(small posts few miles

to the north), salvaged one of these which was partially embedded in

the sand, and, after plugging the holes with various substances and

making it reasonably watertight, enjoyed great deal of fun when off

duty, journeying between their station, and Ferry Post. The usual

procedure was to use horse to tow the pontoon south and utilise the

slow current, ever flowing north, on the homeward trip. Ihe real func-

tion of the horse was to draw an ordinary railway sleeper horizontally

along the sandy shore of the Canal each evening, thus forming smooth

surface, the object of which was to indicate if efforts to place mines or

other obstacles in the waterway had been made during the previous

night.

Fish were fairly plentiful in Lake Timsah on our arrival, due to

the fact that for some time previously the local fishermen had, for mili-

tary reasons, been prohibited from following their calling. This safety

measure, however, was overcome by our unit providing fully armed

man to take charge of each boat; in return for which we were to receive

half of the fish caught. Our Sergt.-Cook, the versatile McDuff, was

appointed to take delivery of each catch, and his interpretation of half

the fish was as follows: If boat landed, say, 40 fish, Mac took 20 of

them, but these 20 were the LARGEST ones. The unfortunate gippos

violently raged and gesticulated in protest but to no purpose. Mac was

adamant, 20 was half of 40?in Australia, anyhow.
