MONTHLY MAGAZINE OF THE 30th BATTALION,

N.S.W. SCOTTISH REGIMENT.

HEADQUARTERS, DRILL HALL, MILLER'S POINT, SYDNEY.

Commanding Officer: Lt.'Col. H. B. TAYLOR, M.C., V.D.

Vol. 2. No. 10. APRIL, 1937. PRICE, 3d.

Incidents in the Life of the

30th Battalion A.I.F,

(BY Lt.-Col. H- SLOAN).

CHAPTER IX.

arrived at Moascar on 28th May, 1916, the first portion of the

sth Division and remained until June 15th.

The line of defences east of the Canal, on which so much time,

energy, and material had been expended was abandoned, and prepar-

ations were made to leave Egypt. Rumour had been rife for months

past as to our probable destination; some asserted that the reason for

our being kept so long in Egypt was that we were destined to re-

enforce the troops in Mesopotamia, others asserted, with equal force

that our next move would be to Salonica. Fortunately these prophets

were proved to be wrong.

On 30th May avc received our first definite orders to proceed to

France and preliminary arrangements for departure were at once

put in hand. The news was very welcome, as the novelty of the near

East had worn off and all ranks were eager to move to itcav field of

action. The weather was extremely hot, nothing less than 130 for

days on end- Our tents Avere pitched on loose fine sand on which

the slightest movement brought up cloud of dust Avhich, with the

assistance of myriads of flies, impregnated the food and made living

conditions ery uncomfortable.

An ofifset to these disabilities was the proximity of Ismalia,

which, being the junction of the Suez-Cairo Suez-Port Said railway,

is town of some importance. It is prettily situated on the western

shore of Lake Timsah. Its principal attraction, apart from picture

theatre and other amenities, are its well ordered parks and gardens,

kept alive by the fresh water which, in common with the whole of

Power Egypt, comes from the Nile. The principal buildings are oc-

cupied by the Commission controlling the Canal which, although al-

most entirely under French administration, partially belongs to P>rit-

ain. It will be remembered that in 1875, Disraeli, afterwards Lord

Reaconsfield, taking advantage of the impecuniosity of the reigning

Khedive, made deal that has proved more profitable to his country

than perhaps any other transaction of modern times.

To the biblical student the tOAvn is interesting as supposedly

occupying the site of the ancient city of Succoth.
