CLASS

SYDNEY.

Nov. 1, 1941,

[Registered at the General Post Office, Sydney, for Transmission by Post Newspaper.]

ARMISTICE DAY.

In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high,

If ye break faith with us who die,

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders Fields.

JOHN McCRAE.

How sleep the brave, who sink to rest

By all their country’s wishes blest!

When Spring, with dewy fingers cold,

Returns to deck their hallowed mould,

She there shall dress sweeter sod

Than Fancy’s feet have ever trod.

By fairy hands their knell is rung;

By forms unseen their dirge is sung;

There Honour comes, pilgrim grey,

To bless the turf that wraps their clay;

And Freedom shall awhile repair

To dwell, weeping hermit, there!

WILLIAM COLLINS.
