Fix this textCRUFT’S, 1886-1936
Fix this textBy CAPTAIN W. LEWIS RENWICK
Fix this textA golden jubilee is always an event of in-
Fix this textterest, and for that reason to doggie people
Fix this textall over the world Cruft’s show this year was
Fix this textprobably the event of all time, as far as dogs
Fix this textand dog showing are concerned, for is not
Fix this textthis show the best known of them all? This
Fix this textis an appropriate time to write of Cruft’s show,
Fix this textas it is known. lam fortunate in that I know
Fix this textMr. Cruft, the great impressario. I know
Fix this textof no one like him. As an organiser he is
Fix this textsuperlative. From lowly beginnings he has
Fix this textcreated such an exhibition that one can roam
Fix this textthe world without finding its equal. Charles
Fix this textCruft, as a boy, close on 70 years ago, was
Fix this textbehind the counter at Spratt’s shop. He then
Fix this textbecame a traveller for them, and it was thus
Fix this texthe began his memorable connection with
Fix this textBritish and Continental dogdom. At 26 years
Fix this textof age he took charge of the entire dog section
Fix this textof the Paris exhibition of 1878. In 1886 he
Fix this textorganised the first Cruft’s dog show. It was
Fix this textconfined to Terriers, and drew an entry of
Fix this text570 at the Royal Aquarium. Four more shows
Fix this textwere run annually, until in 1890 he took a
Fix this textlease of the Agricultural Hall in London, and
Fix this texthad, and still has, the sole right of holding
Fix this textdog shows in that building. This plucky ven-
Fix this textture was an instant success, and his show has
Fix this textgone from one record to another, until this
Fix this textyear he drew the world’s record of 10,560
Fix this textentries. Besides dogs, every reputable maker
Fix this textof dog food, medicines, and kennels has a stand
Fix this textat Cruft’s, also game bird firms, and numerous
Fix this textother industries allied to the large industry of
Fix this textdog breeding in England. Cruft’s annual pos-
Fix this textter is probably as well known as any in Eng-
Fix this textland, and is always the same—a beautiful head
Fix this textstudy of a St. Bernard dog, with the words,
Fix this text“Cruft’s Dog Show,” and the venue and date as
Fix this textthe only necessity to let all England know that
Fix this textthis great exhibition has come round in Febru-
Fix this textary once more. Mr. Cruft always draws the
Fix this textelite of QGgdom to his show. Queen Victoria
Fix this textmade it a rule to exhibit her dogs, which she
Fix this textloved so well, at Cruft’s show only. King
Fix this textEdward VII.. as Prince of Wales, by his con-
Fix this textstant support, gave Mr. Cruft the prestige he so
Fix this textfully deserved. Queen Alexandra was a fre-
Fix this textquent exhibitor, and King George V. often
Fix this textexhibited in the gun dog classes, and his son,
Fix this textour present beloved King Edward VIII., the
Fix this textpatron of the Cairn Terrier Club, exhibited an
Fix this textAlsatian in 1928. Cruft’s, indeed, is the Mecca
Fix this textof all British dog men, and the gun dog entry
Fix this textis a wonderful one. This year Labradors have
Fix this textthe astounding total of 898 entries. I have
Fix this texthad the honour of judging at Cruft’s, and
Fix this texthave won challenge certificates there, too, which
Fix this textI think is the hall-mark of my dog-showing
Fix this textexperiences, both as a judge and as an exhibitor.
Fix this textI found the arrangements made as perfect as
Fix this textit was possible for an exhibition, which is
Fix this textall hustle and bustle. No little detail was
Fix this textever forgotten, and on behalf of all Victorian
Fix this textdoggie folk I congratulate Mr. Charles Cruft,
Fix this texton the wonderful vote of confidence he has
Fix this textbeen accorded this year, and hope that he
Fix this textand his charming wife will be supervising the
Fix this textarrangements of the one and only Cruft’s dog
Fix this textshow for many years to come.
