Fix this textThe Open Parade of the Victorian Poultry
Fix this textand Kennel Club, for which the schedule
Fix this textappears in this issue, will be held at the Mel-
Fix this textbourne Exhibition on April 19, and proceeds
Fix this textwill be donated to the Queen Victoria Hospital
Fix this textRebuilding Appeal.
Fix this textIntending exhibitors are reminded that
Fix this textentries close on April 7 (Easter Monday).
Fix this textAs the “Australia Makes It” exhibition will
Fix this textbe in progress at the same place at the same
Fix this texttime, visitors to the Parade will be able to take
Fix this textin the two events at the one outing, as all
Fix this textproceeds go to the Hospital Fund.
Fix this textA series of novelty classes and a pet com-
Fix this textpetition will be conducted in an adjacent area
Fix this textby the Junior V.S.P.A. and the Tailwaggers’
Fix this textClub, with Colonel George Sutton in charge.
Fix this textVICTORIAN GUNDOG CLUB
Fix this textThe Victorian Gundog Club will hold its
Fix this textnext meeting in Room 92, Victorian Railways
Fix this textInstitute Building, on 14th April (see advert.),
Fix this textwhen Mr. A. D. Butcher will give a talk on the
Fix this text“Conservation of Native Game.” Mr. Butcher
Fix this textis the senior biologist attached to the Fisheries
Fix this textand Game Department, and has a thorough
Fix this textknowledge of his subject. He will deal with it
Fix this textin a way which will be of special appeal to
Fix this textthose who are interested in shooting. The Club
Fix this textis very fortunate in having arranged for Mr.
Fix this textButcher to deliver this address, and a full
Fix this textattendance of members is expected, A cordial
Fix this textinvitation is extended to any others interested
Fix this textto be present.
Fix this textFIELD TRIAL
Fix this textA Field Trial will be held on Anzac Day, Fri-
Fix this textday, 25th April. The Trial will be for Pointers
Fix this textand Setters, and there will be Novice and Open

Fix this textwill close on Monday, 14th April. The Open
Fix this textStake will be of special interest, as the winner
Fix this textwill be awarded the “W. E. Peverill Memorial
Fix this textTrophy,” valued at £5. Mr. Peverill was a
Fix this textvery enthusiastic member of the Committee of
Fix this textthe Club right up to the time of his sudden
Fix this textdeath last year, and he was most interested in
Fix this textthe Field Trial side of the Club’s activities.
Fix this textThe Committee felt that the giving of a Trophy
Fix this textat a Field Trial in his name would be a fitting
Fix this textway to commemorate his memory.
Fix this textOwing to the uncertainty as to where game
Fix this textwill be found, the exact location of the Trial
Fix this textwill not be decided until after Easter, but it
Fix this textwill be held within a reasonable distance from
Fix this textMelbourne.
Fix this textTHE VALUE OF TYPE
Fix this textBy DOUGLAS T. SINCLAIR
Fix this textlast year’s Royal Melbourne Show judge. This article apeared in the Year Book issued by
Fix this textthe New Zealand Kennel Club, of which Mr. Sinclair is President.
Fix this textWhilst judging at one of our recent Kennel
Fix this textClub Shows I overheard the following remark:
Fix this text“I wonder how he arrives at his decision oyer
Fix this textthose two dogs; they appear to be entirely dif-
Fix this textferent types.” This remark, which came from
Fix this textthe ringside, was evidently made by an inter-
Fix this textested and perhaps one of our younger fanciers.
Fix this textHowever, the nature of the expression prompts
Fix this textme to write this article and to make a few
Fix this textcomments and perhaps advise as to the extreme
Fix this textvalue of type. In doing so I trust same will be
Fix this textof interest to those amongst us who are striv-
Fix this texting to compete with older and more experienced
Fix this textbreeders.
Fix this textType is the essence and foundataion of suc-
Fix this textcess in breeding, not only dogs, but all other
Fix this textliving creatures. To ensure that you are going
Fix this textto breed correct to type, make doubly sure that
Fix this textthe dog you intend to breed from has a clean
Fix this textpedigree that is, authenticated without a
Fix this textshadow of doubt, and remember that while like
Fix this textmay beget like, the inevitable tendency is to
Fix this textthrow back to former generations.
Fix this textThe person who elects to breed dogs must
Fix this texthave the bumps of patience and hope very
Fix this textstrongly developed, for if he imagines that he
Fix this texthas only to mate his bitch to some well-known
Fix this textprize-winner in order to produce a champion,
Fix this texthe had better give the game up and try some
Fix this textother hobby. The first thing the fancier wants
Fix this textto do is to fix in his mind the ideal dog, true
Fix this textto type in every way, and set to work by patient
Fix this textefforts, and in face of many disappointments,
Fix this textto produce it. If it is a Fox Terrier he decides
Fix this textto breed, see that it looks like one and not like
Fix this texta Bull Terrier; if a Collie, see that it looks like
Fix this textone and not a Borzoi, and so on with all breeds.
Fix this textEach individual and distinct breed must not
Fix this texthave anything foreign in its make-up. Each
Fix this textdog must be true to type and look the ideal of
Fix this textthe breed that he represents.
Fix this textIt’s a mistaken idea that, having acquired a
Fix this textbitch, say, good in all departments save in the
Fix this texthead, that to rectify this defect all he has to
Fix this textdo is to breed her to the best-headed winning
Fix this textdog known. He must first satisfy himself that
Fix this textthe head is not a chance one, but is an inherited
Fix this textone, handed down from many generations good
Fix this textin this particular, and consequently potent to
Fix this textreproduce its like, and so in all other points
Fix this textthat he wishes to reproduce.
Fix this textAs a breeder for over 40 years it is my experi-
Fix this textence that the smaller bitches full of quality
Fix this textare the best to breed from. Those having mas-
Fix this textculine tendencies or characteristics should be
Fix this textavoided. If you are in doubt as to the dog to
Fix this textbreed from, consult the experienced breeder.
Fix this textDon’t waste your bitch by mating her to the
Fix this textdog that is handiest, just because he is a prize
Fix this textwinner. Make sure that he comes from a
Fix this textfamily that is breeding on and producing typi-
Fix this textcal stock. It is better to let your bitch miss
Fix this textthan breed her to some dog that will give you
Fix this texta litter of the nondescript type. Save her until
Fix this textyou can mate her to the right dog. It is a
Fix this textmistake to misuse your bitch. Always remem-
Fix this textber that the best results will be obtained in
Fix this textthe first three or four litters, after which a
Fix this textbitch rarely produces anything so good.
Fix this textIn conclusion I would like to impress upon
Fix this textbreeders to take your hobby seriously, and you
Fix this textwill be amply repaid, even if success does not
Fix this textalways crown your efforts. The breeding of
Fix this textdogs is a most fascinating pursuit and presents
Fix this textmany varying delights.
