Biographical / Historical
The Primitive Methodist denomination was formed in 1811 by the merger of the Camp Meeting Methodists and the Clowesites. The founders were Hugh Bourne and William Clowes, converts to Wesleyan Methodism who became local preachers. They were both interested in open-air preaching. As a result they began to hold what they called 'Camp Meetings' in 1807. The Wesleyan Conference in 1807 concluded that these meetings were 'highly improper' in England. Bourne and Clowes continued their evangelistic work and, as a result, Bourne was expelled from the Wesleyan Methodist Society in 1808 and Clowes two years later.
In 1812 it was decided that the name of the new denomination should be 'The Society of Primitive Methodists'. This denomination joined with the Wesleyan Methodists and the United Methodist Church in 1932 to form The Methodist Church.
