Biographical / Historical
Sir Phipps Hornby (1785-1867), the son of the Reverend Geoffrey Hornby, was born at Winwick, Lancashire. He entered the Royal Navy in 1797 and was promoted to lieutenant in 1804. He took command of his first ship in 1806 and became a captain in 1810. For several years took part in actions in the Mediterranean and the Adriatic, but after the end of the Napoleonic Wars he had no further service until 1832. He then became superintendent of the Royal Naval Hospital at Portsmouth. He was transferred to Woolwich in 1838 as superintendent of the dockyard and subsequently was comptroller of the coast guard. Hornby was promoted to rear-admiral in 1846 and from 1847 to 1850 was commander-in-chief of the Pacific Station. He was knighted in 1852 and retired in 1858 with the rank of admiral.
Sir Geoffrey Thomas Phipps Hornby (1825-1895) was the son of Admiral Sir Phipps Hornby and his wife Sophia. He was born at Winwick, Lancashire, and attended Winwick Grammar School and Southwood's School, Plymouth. He joined the Royal Navy in 1837 and served in the Mediterranean and at the Cape of Good Hope. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1844. In 1847 he accompanied his father to the Pacific Station as his flag lieutenant. He was promoted to the rank of commander in 1850 and captain in 1852, the youngest captain in the Navy. In the following years he served in the Pacific, the Mediterranean, the Channel and the west coast of Africa. In 1869 Hornby was made a rear-admiral and commanded the flying squadron (1869-71) and the Channel squadron (1871-74). Promoted vice-admiral in 1875, he took command of the Mediterranean Station in 1877, which he held during the Russo-Turkish War. He was knighted in 1878. In 1881 he was appointed president of the Royal Naval College at Portsmouth and he was later president of the Navy League. He was made Admiral of the Fleet in 1888. From 1875 onwards he was consulted by the Admiralty on all matters of policy and even in his last years he remained a highly influential figure.
Robert Stewart Phipps Hornby (1866-1956) was the son of Sir Geoffrey Phipps Hornby and his wife Emily. He entered the Navy in 1879 and served in the Egyptian War in 1882. He became a lieutenant in 1886 and a captain in 1902. In 1914-15 he was commander-in-chief of the North America and West Indies Station. He retired in 1922 with the rank of admiral.
Windham Mark Phipps Hornby (1896-1987), the son of Robert Phipps Hornby, entered the Navy in 1909. He was promoted to sub-lieutenant in 1916, lieutenant in 1918, and lieutenant-commander in 1925. He retired in 1932.

Biographical / Historical
Admiral Sir Geoffrey Phipps Hornby: (1825-1895).
Son of Sir Phipps Hornby, entered navy in 1837. Between 1858-1865 he commanded Tribune, Neptune and Nedgar. In 1869 he was promoted to Rear Admiral and given command of the Flying Squadron. He was one of the Lords of the Admiralty, 1875-1877, and C in C Mediterranean 1877-1880.
