NEW AFFILIATIONS

The attention of the Committee of the

K.C.C. has been drawn to reports of the

formation or proposed formation of an all-

breeds kennel club in the Preston and

Northcote districts.

These reports indicate that certain sup-

port has been given the project even

trophies have been collected—on the un-

derstanding that affiliation with the K.C.C.

would be obtained. Support probably was

increased by Press report that mem-

ber of the K.C.C.’s committee was an

office-bearer of the club, this being ac-

cepted as most favourable pointer to

ultimate affiliation. The Committee of

the K.C.C. announces that the Press report

is untrue, that no application for affilia-

tion has been received, and that it has

learned of no good reason why it should

alter its policy of not affiliating any more

metropolitan all-breeds clubs. This policy

has been maintained for many years, with

the exception of the affiliation v»f an

organisation for ladles. At that time the

K.C.C. was unique among the influential

controlling bodies throughout the world

in not having such club affiliated with

it, and as women take such an active part

in dog-showing recognition was accorded

an association for them. This association

was not new in the accepted sense, as it

really replaced one which did not meet with

the K.C.C.’s approval. The formation of

other all-breeds clubs in the metropolitan,

area constitutes an entirely different

matter.

There are so many clubs affiliated now

that it is impracticable to avoid the hold-

ing of two, and sometimes more, fixtures

on the same days. The committee cannot

see any reasons why this undesirable state

should be aggravated.

Although increasing numbers of the

public have been attracted to dog-showing

there are still insufficient dogs likely to

be exhibited in Victoria to ensure proper

support for all fixtures. Exhibitors have

certain amount of money to spend on

entry fees, so that any increase in all-

breeds shows and parades would mean still

fewer dogs and entries for all clubs, and

consequent reduction in their revenue

and cheapening of awards.

Unfortun, tely the ideal of each club

holding its fixtures in its own district, and

so not interfering with the revenue of

others, is still only an ideal. Until such

time as there are many more dogs being

exhibited, district shows would only mean

smaller shows. One or two clubs attempting

it now would be at distinct disadvantage

to those functioning in the city of Mel-

bourne. Exhibitors naturally are attracted

to the fixtures most centrally situated, par-

ticularly under existing petrol restrictions.

All supporters of the K.C.C. are advised

not to lend their patronage to the forma-

tion of clubs until such time as an as-

surance of official recognition is obtained.

Withdrawal of support if and when the

K.C.C. rejects affiliation is not enough.

The harm may have been done, because

there are many well-meaning people who,

in their lack of knowledge of canine

affairs, may resent their district’s club

being refused recognition, and insist upon

endeavouring to keep it alive outside the

sanction of the K.C.C.
