Fix this textNew Rules For Water Tests
Fix this textThe Field Trial Advisory Committee has
Fix this textgiven considerable time to revision of the
Fix this textrules governing water tests, and the committee
Fix this textof the K.C.C. has now adopted its recommen-
Fix this textdations. These involve the replacement of all
Fix this textexisting rules with a complete set of new ones.
Fix this textAn extract from these, covering the actual
Fix this texttesting, is given here. In future only judges
Fix this textwho are licensed by the Committee of the
Fix this textK.C.C. for field trials will be approved as judges
Fix this textof these tests.
Fix this textTEST ONE
Fix this textThe handler, with dog on lead, shall com-
Fix this textmence the test from a marked spot approxi-
Fix this textmately 10 yards from the waterline, and shall
Fix this textplace the dog at his side at either the “drop”
Fix this textor “sit” position, and shall remove the lead.
Fix this textUpon instructions from the judge the hand-
Fix this textler, with gun in hand, shall advance with the
Fix this textdog at side or heel to the edge of the water,
Fix this textwhere the dog shall again be placed either at
Fix this textthe “drop” or the “sit” position, but the handler
Fix this textmay use only sign and/or sound.
Fix this textOn instructions from the judge, the steward
Fix this textshall present the object to be retrieved in such
Fix this texta manner that the dog sights it. The steward
Fix this textshall then throw the object well across the
Fix this textwater towards the opposite bank, the handler
Fix this textat the same time aiming, and if ordered, firing
Fix this textthe gun.
Fix this text(NOTE. —With the consent of the judge, a
Fix this textsteward in close proximity may fire for the
Fix this texthandler, who, nevertheless, shall retain a gun
Fix this textduring each test, and shall go through the
Fix this textevolutions of aiming and firing.)
Fix this textThe dog shall remain in place (at the “drop”
Fix this textor “sit” position) until, on word from the judge,
Fix this textthe handler shall order the dog' to retrieve.
Fix this textIt shall then enter the water with style and
Fix this textfreedom in as straight a line as possible. The
Fix this texthandler shall then return to the marked spot.
Fix this textThe dog shall retrieve the object ,cleanly and
Fix this textwithout delay, shall return direct to handler,
Fix this textand shall stand or sit with the object in its
Fix this textmouth in front of the handler until, on word
Fix this textfrom the judge, the handler orders the dog to
Fix this textdeliver. The handler, without stepping for-
Fix this textward, shall take the object, with one hand,
Fix this textfrom the mouth of the dog. (It is most im-
Fix this textportant that the dog shall deliver the object
Fix this texttenderly, i.e., with a “soft mouth,” and that,
Fix this textfor balance, its grip be as near as possible to
Fix this textthe centre of the object.) The dog shall then
Fix this texttake up the place position indicated by handler,
Fix this textand shall remain in place until given the next
Fix this textorder.
Fix this textNo points shall be deducted should the dog
Fix this textdrop the object, shake itself of surplus water
Fix this textand immediately pick up the object to deliver
Fix this textit to the handler.
Fix this textThe principal points to be considered by
Fix this textjudges in estimating the merits of performances
Fix this textin competitive work shall be sagacity, nose,
Fix this textsteadiness, dash, perseverance, and retrieving.
Fix this textThe lastmentioned, to which supreme import-
Fix this textance must always be accorded, should be with
Fix this texta tender moutl*. and right up to hand. Style
Fix this textin working shall also count.
Fix this textTEST TWO
Fix this textThis test shall be conducted on exactly the
Fix this textsame lines as Test One, except that the steward
Fix this textshall, where possible, throw the object into
Fix this textcover on the opposite bank, and out of sight
Fix this textof the deg.
Fix this textThe judge shall add and deduct points under
Fix this textthe following scales:—
Fix this textAdditions. Max. Points.
Fix this textStaunchness, steadiness and obedi-
Fix this textence .. 4
Fix this textStyle, eagerness and action .... 4
