The National Library of Australia gratefully acknowledges the contribution of the other foundation AJCP partners, the State Library of New South Wales and The National Archives of the UK, and all other organisations which supported the work of the AJCP, the world's most extensive collaborative copying project, operating from 1948 to 1997.
Introduction
Scope and Contents
The Port Line Ltd Records consist of the company's administrative and operational papers. Port Line was a subsidiary of the Cunard Steamship Company, and the Port Line series forms part of the larger Cunard Steamship Co Ltd archive, which comprises most of the surviving business records produced by Cunard since it became a limited company in 1878.
The Port Line Ltd records filmed by the Australian Joint Copying Project comprise Board papers 1914-68, Registers and Transfers of Stocks and Shares 1914-70, correspondence and company administration 1890-59, correspondence of Directors, Manager and Secretary 1924-40, loss of ships files 1939-45, private letter-books, correspondence and indexes 1915-65, Charter Parties 1921-60, Accountant's Department files 1914-51, Publicity Department files 1893-1968, and miscellaneous files 1890-1967.
Subjects covered in the correspondence files include: ships' agents; visits by officials to Australia and New Zealand; Blue Star Line; Cunard White Star Line; outside competition and outward trade; chilled meat; meat companies; fruit guarantees; wool buyers; passengers; waterside workers; and statistics. Correspondents include J.R. Rooper, W. Donald, H.W. Corry, Sir James Corry, R.H. Senior and W.G. de Gruchy.

Historical Note
The Commonwealth and Dominion Line Ltd. was formed in London in January 1914 as a result of the amalgamation of four family shipping companies engaged in trading between Britain and Australia and New Zealand. Its fleet initially comprised 25 ships contributed by Tyser & Company (8 vessels), James P. Corry (5 vessels), Thomas Royden & Sons (3 vessels) and William Milburn & Company (9 vessels). G.D. Tyser & Company had been established in 1873, while William Milburn's Anglo-Australasian Steam Navigation Company followed in 1883. From 1889 and 1891 onwards, the Corry and Royden families provided steamers which were operated on commission by the Tyser Line. Walter Tyser was chairman of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line from 1914 to 1939.
Senior managers of the company from London were permanently based in Sydney, Wellington and New York. In Australia Gibbs, Bright & Company were the agents for the ships in nearly all the ports. Initially, the company had three sailings per month from London to Australia, one sailing a month from London to New Zealand, and one sailing a month from New York to Australia and New Zealand. During World War I some of the ships were requisitioned by the British, Australian and New Zealand governments and ten ships were lost due to enemy action or collisions.
In March 1916 the board decided that all the ships in the fleet should be named after Australian and New Zealand ports. The term 'Port Line' was increasingly used in conversation by port officials and in 1937 it became the official name of the company. After World War I services were introduced from Hamburg to Australia and from Suva to New Zealand. New vessels were built to replace those lost in the War and by 1929 all the older vessels had been disposed of. During World War II 13 ships were destroyed in enemy action and 167 crew members lost their lives. At the end of the war, another rebuilding program was needed. By 1950 the fleet again totalled 25 ships and the next few years were to be a time of prosperity for the Port Line. There were three sailings a month from London to the major Australian ports, with occasional visits to outports such as Newcastle, Geelong and Burnie. There were eight sailings a year from London to the major New Zealand ports, and occasional visits to smaller ports such as Nelson and Napier. Port Line vessels carried wool cargoes directly to Hamburg, Bremen, Antwerp, Dunkirk and other European ports, as well as London.
The fortunes of the Port Line deteriorated after 1960 and in 1966 it recorded its first loss since 1914. In 1916 the Cunard Steam-Ship Company of Liverpool had acquired all the ordinary shares of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line and the Cunard chairman and another Cunard director sat on its board. Cunard had seldom interfered with the management of the Port Line. By 1964, however, the Cunard chairman was concerned about the declining financial position of the Port Line. In 1968 Blue Star Port Line Management Ltd. was formed to manage the 56 ships in the combined fleets. The introduction of container services in Australia in 1969 and New Zealand in 1972 meant that Port Line ships were gradually only required for supplementary services. Cunard itself was taken over by Trafalgar House Investments in 1971. Trafalgar sold off the minority interests of the Port Line in stevedoring companies, shipbrokers and shipping agencies. The Port Line still had 18 cargo ships, but the number had dropped to five by 1977. The last Port Line conventional ship to load direct for Britain left New Zealand in November 1978. The last two Port Line ships were scrapped in Shanghai in 1985.

Series D42/PL4. Correspondence and Company Administration- Main Filing Series, 1915 - 1959
315 items,
Files covering aspects of the company's administration, and, particularly, its negotiations with governments, associations of shipowners, and other firms, covering the Australasian trade via America. It will be observed that the 'Old Files' series PL3 are files abstracted from PL4 and placed in boxfiles as an exercise in removing noncurrent material.
Within the files each paper has a registration stamp bearing the file reference and, in the case of copies of cables, the date. A few files carry the reference number of boxfiles containing relevant earlier papers, presumably in PL3.
Original file titles and references are given, and additional information is given in square brackets. Covering dates are those of actual first and last papers, since in many cases the dates marked on the files are not accurate.
