Fix this textBY R. F. TOUTCHER.
Fix this textI have read with some interest —and I must confess
Fix this textwith some pleasure, too —the article contributed by Mr.
Fix this textA. J. Macdonald on the above subject. As an essay on
Fix this text“ Imperialism ” or “ Westminster Abbey,” it is very fine ;
Fix this textbut, though excelling in literary quality, it fails, as far
Fix this textas argument is concerned, to deal with the question at
Fix this textissue. The Australian aspect—the only one with which
Fix this textwe are dealing —has been completely lost sight of in the
Fix this textwide sweep of sentimentalism indulged in by the
Fix this textwriter.
Fix this text“ The Imperialist, or Britisher,” to quote Mr. Mac-
Fix this textdonald, “ extends his patriotism to include every pro-
Fix this textvince of the British Empire, and is exceedingly anxious
Fix this textto extend it to include our great kinsmen of the United
Fix this textStates of America.” The extensive survey of the Im-
Fix this textperialist, his desire for power, and his respect for
Fix this textstrength, are no evidences of a pure patriotism. The
Fix this texthuman mind, broad as it is in some cases, is too narrow
Fix this textto take within its compass all the vastness of so extend-
Fix this texted an Empire.
Fix this textGenerate, first, a love for Australia in the “ Little
Fix this textAustralian,” and thereafter by slow degrees you may
Fix this textextend his patriotism. But if he does not love the
Fix this textland that gave him birth, is it possible that he can love
Fix this textthat land upon which his eyes have never looked ? If
Fix this texttravel is necessary to beget an Empire Patriotic"!, then
Fix this textMr. Macdonald practically admits that my contention
Fix this textis correct.
Fix this textEquality also is essential to the growth of a sturdy
Fix this textpatriotism, and Australia does not wish to be merely a
Fix this textjoint in the Imperial tail.
Fix this textThe “ Little Englander ” has, by successive stages
Fix this textextended his patriotism in proportion to the widening
Fix this textof the Empire. The Association is tc-day cultivating
Fix this textthat patriotism which, struck deep root in the native
Fix this textsoil will, as time goes on, produce a mighty tree whose
Fix this textbranches will extend over that vast expanse which the
Fix this textflight of “Imperial” fancy has taken.
Fix this textOn questions essentially “British” there should be
Fix this textno division among the sons of the Empire ; nor, for the
Fix this textmatter of that, among the Anglo-Saxon race, but are
Fix this textthere not questions essentially Australian awaiting
Fix this texttheir determination at our hands ? ; and, as such, do
Fix this textnot touch at any point beyond the limits of our sea-girt
Fix this textland. Remote from the great centre of the Empire, we
Fix this textare the inheritors of a new land—a land with all the
Fix this textfreshness and vigor of youth, and as distinct in its char-
Fix this textade) istics as youth is to age. In this, the transitional
Fix this textmoment of our national existence, happy it is for our
Fix this textpresent and future that such an Association as ours
Fix this textexists. The “ Little Australians ” can, through the
Fix this textmedium of their national organisation, stamp their
Fix this textgenius on the history of their country, as did many of
Fix this textthe “ Little Englanders ” who now lie “ sleeping the
Fix this text“long, last sleep of all in Westminster Abbey.” As the
Fix this textAssociation extends its sphere of usefulness and its
Fix this textpower for good over the vast Australian Continent it
Fix this textcan, by wise guidance, unity of purpose, and honesty
Fix this textof effort, be made the determining factor in solving
Fix this textthose great human questions which are now with us,
Fix this textand those that at present are in the womb of time, and
Fix this textwhich the future has yet to reveal.
Fix this textIn my humble judgment, Australia’s sons have yet to
Fix this textplay their greatest part on the stage of their own
Fix this textcountry. To fashion its destiny with their own hands,
Fix this textto mould its character with the true spirit of national
Fix this textlife, and thus to prepare it as a nation mighty and great
Fix this textto play its part in the theatre of the world’s affairs, are
Fix this textto my mind the noblest ideals that we can set ourselves
Fix this textas worthy of realisation, and as such peculiarly adapted
Fix this textto cause us to reflect whether it would be wise cr un-
Fix this textwise to link others than native-born in that great
Fix this textnational chain which we have been so long forging to
Fix this textencircle the sons of Australia.
Fix this textIt is hardly necessary to argue seriously against Bishop
Fix this textThornton’s aspersions of Australian character. It would
Fix this textbe difficult to find a score of persons in Victoria who
Fix this texthold that the Australian is anything like as black as he
Fix this texthas been painted by Samuel Ballarat. True, vice
Fix this texte in our midst, and will continue to exist until the
Fix this textcrack of doom —for, as Mark Twain says, “There’s a
Fix this text“ deal of human nature about mankind,” and human
Fix this textnature is considerably lop-sided. The Australian is
Fix this textonly the average human, with the average human’s
Fix this textshare of good and bad qualities.
Fix this text“ Those who seek shall find.” The Bishop has been
Fix this textseeking and has found ; but he has left out of account
Fix this textthe vast deal of kindliness, sobriety, honesty, and man-
Fix this textliness that exist—for which he did not seek, and con-
Fix this textsequently did not find.
