SPECIAL NOTICE TO A. BRANCHES.

We will be glad to receive items of Association

news and reports of branch meetings. This will

tend to keep the members more in touch with each

other, and promote friendly intercourse in man-

ner that must be beneficial to the Association.

Contributions on National or Association topics,

sent to the Editor, will receive careful attention,

and will find place in our columns, should the

subject be deemed of sufficient importance.

Greater Melbourne.

The unco wise and the sonorously

tongued self-constituted knowalls who,

little over twelve months ago, excited

themselves by loudly prognosticating the

inglorious dissolution of the Metropolitan

nnmittee, instead of shedding sympa-

thetic tears at its demise, suddenly find

themselves dumbfounded ac the recent ac-

tivity of the Committee over the “ Greater

Melbourne” movement.

On the qth ult. the Committee -cai lied

unanimously the following resolution

‘‘That provided the sanction of the Board

of Directors be obtained, the Committee

take steps to organise an agitation in favor

of the ‘Greater Melbourne’ movement.

The Board has been only too pleased to

grant not alone their sanction, but also

support and sympathy.

Probably no resolution containing

greater possibilities has ever been car-

ried by the Committee. The movement

involves both civic federation and civic

reform, and now that it has been satis-

factorily launched it should be pursued

with whole-hearted enthusiasm in order

to secure speedy result. The question

is well within the policy and aspirations

of the N.A. and well within the grasp of

the Metropolitan Committee. True, the

federation of cities and towns may not

contain all those elements which charm

and fascinate, and which excite the imagi-

nation and develop within our breasts

glowing, passionate patriotism such as we

have recently experienced and which we

now see happily materialised, and hope

soon to hear proclaimed midst the ringing

shouts of jubilant people—Britannia’s

new born —the Commonwealth of Aus-

tralia But the same forces which made

for the federal union of the States, if ap-

plied with the same whole-hearted zeal to

the “ Greater Melbourne Movement,’’

must necessarily produce an equally satis-

factory result.

The N.A. must live up to the mighty

pn cedent which the federal campaign es-

ta’blished. Every branch did its duty on

that occasion. The new question could

not be taken up by better body than the

Metropolitan Committee, which in the

past—despite the criticism of croakers—

has displayed vitality and becoming use-

fulness. It contains the chosen retire-

sentatives of the metropolitan branches,

and has powerful influence with them,

Whilst the country members may not be

directly interested in the question, they

certainly are anxious that the capital city

of Victoria should be healtny and beauti-

ful, and consequently their support and

sympathy may be expected,

™ ...

Metropolitan Committee, in their

effort to create CIVIC patriotism, deserve
