OBITUARY

It is with sincere regret that we record the passing of

William McLennan of Wangaratta.

With his wife, the late Bill McLennan joined the Wan-

garatta Kennel Club 10 years ago. During his years of

continuous service witfy the Club he held, firstly, the office

of Hon, Treasurer, then Hon. Secretary, and from 1958 until

the time of his death was President of this organisation.

In this capacity he was staunch worker for the Club and

helped considerably in bringing the dog section of the local

show grounds up to its present high standard.

Always ready and willing to help the novice, he has,

during his association with the Club, enthusiastically bred

and exhibited Smooth-haired Dachshunds with considerable

success. His imported dog, K.C.C. and R.A.S. Ch. Silvae

Keepsake, great favourite with ringsiders, has had big

say in major awards, winning at many shows, both local and

interstate, since his arrival in this country.

For 20 years Bill McLennan served with the R.A.N., being

member of the crew of the first ship to leave Australia

at the outbreak of war. He served in every theatre of the

war, including Greece, Crete, Tobruk and Dunkirk.

He passed away on 10th January, 1961, at the Repatriation

Hospital, Heidelberg. Prior to this, he had been actively

associated with the Department of Mines.

All those who knew him will regret the loss of this

sterling friend. To his wife especially, his father, his

brother and sister and those close friends who sadly mourn

him, we extend our deep and sincere sympathy.

Norman F. Coles Retires from the

K.C.C. Committee

The Dog World of Victoria has

indeed lost stalwart executive:

representative upon the recent re-

tirement from the Committee of

the Kennel Control Council of one

of its foundation members in Mr.

Norman F. Coles.

The culmination of life-long

association with dogs was in his

appointment in 1956 to Life

Membership of the Kennel Con-

trol Council, an honour which to

date has been bestowed upon

very few.

Mr. Coles is best known to the

Australian Dog World as an All-

breeds Judge. For many years

his high standard of judging has

been appreciated by exhibitors

all over Australia. He has also

judged in England on more than

one occasion.

His early interest at Dog

Shows was centered around the

British Bulldog, breed with

which he was successfully associ-

ated for many years. For some

considerable time he was associ-

ated with the British Bulldog

Club of Victoria, first as Secre-

tary and later as President.

He has also successfully bred

and exhibited Scottish Terriers

and Dachshunds.

Another prominent position

held by Mr. Coles was that of

President of the Melbourne Dog

Club.

It was his wide experience,

first as Committee member of

the Canine Control Council, then

for five years Committeeman

of the Kennel Control Council of

Victoria, that fitted him so well

for the long period of 25 years

served by him with loyalty and

success as top executive of our

present Kennel Control Council.

Mr. Coles has freely given

much of his time to the advance-

ment of the Show Dog in this

country.

His efficiency as Ring Stew-

ard at our Melbourne Royals and

many smaller Shows, and his

qualifications as Club-man have

always been held in high regard.

Norman Coles, we regret that,

with the march of time, you have

seen fit to reduce your activities

in our mutual hobby interests and

we thank you most sincerely for

your sterling efforts of the past.

Mr. David White has been ap-

pointed to seat on the K.C.C.

Committee owing to the vacancy-

created by the retirement of Mr.

Coles.
