Journal 9 March-27 May 1853 kept by passenger on emigrant ship Marco Polo on a voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne.

Edward Smith Stanley (1775-1851), 13th Earl of Derby (succeeded 1834) was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was a member of the House of Commons from 1796 to 1832. His principal interest was natural history, particularly zoological classification and the taxonomy of birds. He was president of the Linnean Society of London (1828-34) and the Zoological Society of London (1831-51). He supported collectors in remote countries, such as John Gilbert and John MacGillivray in Australia, and created an extensive menagerie and museum at his home, Knowsley Hall, near Liverpool. His natural history collections formed the basis of the Liverpool Museum, opened in 1860.

Biographical / Historical
The Mersey Docks and Harbour Board took over from the Liverpool Corporation the management of the docks in Liverpool and Birkenhead in 1858. It comprised 24 elected members and four nominated by the Mersey Conservancy Commission. It was based in the Port of Liverpool Building, which opened in 1907 and is one of the grandest buildings in Liverpool. The Board was reconstituted as a company in 1972.

Biographical / Historical
John Towne Danson (1817-1898) was a journalist, writer, farmer, barrister and secretary of the Thames and Mersey Insurance Company. His son Sir Francis Chatillon Danson (1855-1926) also worked in marine insurance and became a central figure in the establishment of Liverpool University. John Danson married into the Lockett Family of Llangollen, Wales. Several members of the family migrated to Canada and Australia including J.G.W. Lockett (1833-1878).

Edward Chester Danson was born on 4 May 1818, in Stratford, Warwickshire. He emigrated to Australia in 1841 on the Elizabeth which left Liverpool on 1 May, and was described by his brother as a shepherd in 1853. He was largely unsuccessful in his ventures in Australia, and depended on an annual stipend of £100 from his brother. Edward died near Tamworth in September 1898.

Silver & Co., Grindlay & Co., and E. Moses & Son, a letter from Lockett to Jane Danson, 19 July 1855, describing the voyage and his impressions of Australia, and extracts from letters of [unknown] Graham (Melbourne) to A. Sand (Glasgow), Sept. 1855, concerning Lockett's financial difficulties.

J.G.W. (George) Lockett (1833-1878) emigrated to Victoria with his wife from London on board the Hope in 1855. Whilst on board, his wife gave birth to a baby daughter.

Biographical / Historical
The Liverpool engineer and shipowner Alfred Holt (1829-1911) and his brother Philip Holt (1830-1915) established the Ocean Steamship Company in 1865. It traded as the Blue Funnel Line. In the early years the ships mainly traded with Mauritius, Penang, Singapore and Shanghai, but later sailed to Australia, the Pacific and America. The Blue Funnel Line came to an end in 1988.
